michigan rewatch

Rewatched Michigan game, and wanted to share some observations:

1. I really like Juwan Howard as their coach
2. Michigan's shooting was incredible. They matched our FG % with tons of jumpers
3. At about the 10:00 to 9:00 minute mark in game, we were on verge of getting blown out (at least pushing into double digits) Michigan had 7 point leads + possession numerous times, we did well to get stops.
4. Luka and CJF were magnificent during the last 9 minutes when we were on the ropes. Both hit clutch and contested shots. CJ's 3 pointer at around 9 minute mark, cut lead from 7 to 4 and got crowd back into game. Huge. Luka hit 3 pointers, step back jumpers and contested banker at elbow. He was oozing confidence (really both were).
5. Our defense was very solid during this same stretch, we forced some misses. Also think UM was getting tired.
6. Our defensive rebounding in last 9 minutes was critical, only recall one offensive rebound. Even if that is not accurate we did nice job on glass.
7. Bakari is very smooth and confident. I love JT but he can be herky jerky and not get into flow of game.
8. Kreiner's 3 pointer off behind back pass form CMac was big, extended our lead when game was tight.
9. CJF's back door bucket was awesome, as they were overplaying him vying for 3 ball
10. FT shooting another factor in win. Have to make 'em...and we did.

This team is 4th in the nation in assists (3rd in Ass/TO ratio), 21st in scoring, 63rd in rebounding, 77th in FT% (and rising), 85th in FG% and around 200th in defensive scoring, which at the pace they play isn't bad and much better than last season. They also have a plus ten in scoring differential. What I like most about this team is their spacing on offense. They create a lot of good looks in what is truly a team first concept. Best passing team since the Miller 6 pack? If CJ is healthy they're 5-1 in conference right now. Lots of fun to watch.

Totally agree with #8. To me, that was big.[/quote]

I think CJ’s 3 in transition was the biggest play. We were getting ready to be down by 9-10 points and it stopped the bleeding and started the come back.

The other crucial play was Garza’s 3 and then the 10 footer he hit shortly after.

1) Generally agree. Don't think he's as good a in-game coach as Belein, but no one is in college. He is very likely a better recruiter based on the class that Howard has coming in next year.
2) Depends how you define shooting. They were bad from 3-point land other than Brooks, making 11 of 34 3's. They were very good on 2's, making 23-34 2 pointers.

Agree with the other observations. Iowa had to play very well to win that game, and they did. Making 27-30 free throws and 9 of 16 3-pointers. That is some serious skill.

#7 is a key moving forward. BE has 12 assists in the last two games and isn’t turning the ball over a ton.

CJ’s FG percentage is nuts. Heard them say during the game he was shooting 49% from 3. Looked this morning and he is now at almost 51%. That’s nuts... and 53% FG percentage.

The efficiency of this team on offense is ridiculous. Rutgers plays solid D and Wednesday is going to be tough. Hawks will have to grind it out and play with the same toughness they have since DePaul.

Good post. Very accurate, but we often don't remember the little things (rebounds, box outs, individual and help defensive plays, ball movement). Connor and Weesy also made huge contributions down the stretch.

Too early to tell on JH being a good coach. He will recruit well there but that only gets you so far.

Crazy how well Michigan has shot against us this year.

CJF is a player- understanding now why Moss was eager to leave.

Bakari is going to have to keep providing good minutes for our season to go well.

This is a TEAM guys and dare I say if they didn't play that way they would be toast.
Just far too many personnel losses to keep up playing only partially as a team.
It was.good to see Luka struggle a little so they get exposed to having to fight and rely on others to take up the slack.

And that was a great spacing play. McCaffrey acted like he was throwing to the post to freeze the big guarding Kriener. Open look and that shot was money! These guys just get it.
With RK, a guy who can score from inside and outside, he has improved so much since last year. Gives us an additional threat to score and for players to worry about when they try to attack the lane. He's been shooting with confidence this year and he's thrown down some nasty dunks at times when they're available. :D

I remembered them taking a lot of jump shots. I went back and looked at the shot chart and they had more close range makes than I remembered. But they still made a lot of jump shots. I am not sure you can say 32% is BAD from 3, slightly below average. They average 36% which is 3rd in the B1G. 32% is below average but would be good for 9th in our league, hardly bad. I still stand by intent of my statement that they shot the ball really well, at over 50%, though would edit my exact description of "incredible" to "incredible from inside the 3 point line." They shot 68% in that case. Peace out.

Trying to get CJ a shot. Didn't get open, passes the ball out top, Garza comes and sets a back pick, pass the ball back to CJ and he gets an open look. Splash! The little things.

I get your point and see what you are saying. Given that Michigan shot 68% on those 2's, they were doing Iowa a favor hoisting all those 3's. Yes, 32% is not terrible, but Michigan got 33 points on those 34 3-point shots. They scored 46 points on 34 2-point shots. Basically Michigan was more successful trying to get to the basket. But kudos to Iowa for a) not fouling and b) executing at a very high level to win a very good game between 2 good teams.

I wonder if there's a "next gen" stat for adjusted defensive scoring based on pace of play.
