Michigan State @ Iowa Baseball

Here we go...6pm, 2pm, 1pm Times. Really need the fans to show up and help Iowa take care of business. Not going to be easy as MSU has been playing a lot better.

Yikes....

Win and we lose one point in RPI
Lose and we lose 66 points

A loss puts our rpi near 70

Yep, just win the series at a minimum. Iowa is in very similar position to last year. Their resume is actually quite strong. Sweep of Illinois, series wins over Okie State (road), Irvine, Nebraska, is a good resume. Even if the RPI will not be that great. But losing series to MSU or Maryland would be really bad news.

Losing the series at Maryland wouldn't be the end of the world. Assuming they keep their RPI in the 80s, that's a solid away series. Dropping a game against MSU would be a drastic hit to Iowa's RPI as stated above. Unfortunately this is as close to 'must sweep' as you're going to get. We really need to get some RPI help from our indirect impact games this weekend.

This.
This.
And.
This.

This weekend is not about climbing the RPI ladder. It's all about trying to tread water and stay where they currently are situated. Lots of reasons to be pulling for Iowa's previous opponents.

Nolan's site currently indicates that, if Iowa wins 2/3 against MSU, loses to WIU and wins 1/3 against Maryland, it would end up with a 72 RPI.

This was an interesting find . . . I checked schedules of the 5 teams immediately ahead of Iowa:

Liberty (#53) - plays 26-21/10-8 Lipscomb in three game set this weekend. Liberty gains 11 points with a win/loses 53 points with a loss.
Boston College (#54) - does not play this weekend
VCU (#55) - plays 18-24/10-8 St. Joseph's in three game set this weekend. (+13 with win/-34 with loss)
Texas (#56) - does not play this weekend
Virginia Tech (#57) - does not play this weekend

Texas, Virginia, and Virginia Tech all have losing records in conference. Sure, RPI is important but the NCAA has taken a stand against including power conference teams in the tournament when they have losing records.

Texas A&M was 13-17 in the SEC last year and received a bid. That written, they were RPI top 20 pretty much all year (if not the entire year). SEC probably receives "most favored conference" status though.

True, and my thought wasn't so much original but re-purposed from Eric Sorenson's column this morning:

One of the best developments to come around our sport in recent years is how the NCAA Selection Committee has seemed to make it a point of emphasis that teams who sit sub-.500 in their conference are not going to get favorable treatment for the NCAA Tournament. We all remember North Carolina from 2016, right? Sitting at 34-21 and No. 21 in the RPI, and then sitting at home in June due to a losing record in the ACC. So who could be this year’s “Losers” who are in danger of putting their postseasons in question? Here are half-dozen teams who need to amp things up the last two weeks of the regular season, or face the consequences…

He then goes on to list Tennessee, Auburn, UCONN, Florida, Oklahoma, and Clemson as teams with high RPIs in danger of missing the tournament due to poor conference records. Of course, some of these teams will get in, likely due to conference prestige, but Iowa's can alleviate any worries if they can win 5 games the rest of the way.

1 down, 2 to go!

On a good note Iowa did pretty well in the indirect games and gained in the RPI. Could finish at 55.

Yep. Games went pretty well for Iowa’s RPI. Irvine up 4 midway through its game and should lend a slight hand to the RPI before the night is out.

Loved the early lead but always fear that a big 1st inning lulls team into thinking game is over. Nice to see two quick responses to MSU tying/getting within one run. Always nice to get that first game.

Looking forward to a good game tomorrow.
