MIDLANDS Champ Session

I think Marinelli could wrestle 57, Young 65, and Kemerer 49. If it's true that he walks around at mid 50s, he could even go 41. Winning Midlands at his walk around shows what a great wrestler he is.

Lol @ Kemerer at 141. Now things are getting crazy.

Ironically, I believe this is not true at all and a huge myth with "reaction time". Pretty much only applies from rear standing position and only applies to opponents hand touching the mat. Does not apply at all to Kem.

I saw some one tweet that at CP too. You may be correct but I don't believe you are. I've watched and officiated too many college matches to count and I've never heard that. I just asked a handful of college coaches and that also said no reaction time at all and not just in rearstanding/slide by position.

No kidding - my HS cut was 163 to 140. And I was lean to start with

Course my success and kdawg's are universes apart. Wish I could blame it on the cut.

Over Montoya? Gillman, Kem, IMar, Valencia....I'd give it to any of those 4 over Montoya. Why not Gillman? Bonus'd his way through the tournament minus his semi-final match. Obviously I'm biased, I just thought Montoya seemed like a pretty random choice of the 10 champions...

I like Montoya for it...Beat Gross and All Galaxy, both surefire AAs and contenders

You're not understanding the "Richards effect". Anyone who can take out Richards HAS to be the OW....................;)

welp - you did not give one answer. I liked G-man - but I'm biased - so Valencia would be good as well - but I'm biased there too (watched him when he was 80 pounds - now he looks 200)

BTW, SIAP, but NE had a team point deducted for unsportsmanlike conduct. Didn't hear it clearly, but I assume it was for Berger's antics. I assume this is all the talk on BWI, Intermat, and all other wrestling boards across the country.

I know you're being sarcastic but it's absolutely hilarious how fast literally EVERYONE is to take a shot at Gilman and the Brands bros. Gilmans psychological warfare even works on opposing fans, they can't get him out of their head lol.

If they take sportsmanship into account I think Gilman is 100% out of OW contention. Okay, I'm done on that topic.

I thought the Berger/Kemerer match was great (50/50 split on those two IMO). I do think Berger had the TD but Kemerer won in the end which is what counts. I think I have Kem at #3 overall after this weekend behind only Nolf and Smith and ahead of Palacio.

He couldn't make 141 last year and he's put on noticeable muscle in the offseason. "Walking around" at 155 might be true but that's with training and keeping weight control. He doesn't have 14 more to cut.

Good point...the ship has sailed anyways.

Me too. Cut 20 to 140 and was skinny. Like I told my wife, didn't have any of the education and nutritional advice these guys would have.

AZ - No way Kem could even consider 41. You are also a little light on his walking around weight. In a perfect world he would be at 49.

Makes sense. Most guys "walking around" weight isn't the off-season weight or what walking around weight used to mean with morning of or 24hour weigh in. If in fact it is 155, that's probably his day before weigh in after practice, after good nutrition control weight. Not the "I just polished off the Christmas candy while watching the midlands from my couch" weight that I'm dealing with right now .

Some random thoughts...

Gilman is a beast, i'm glad he got tested in the semi's he will be that much more honed in the rest of the season.

Really hope that when Clark does come back, he is healthy enough to compete with Tomasello/Richards/Montoya/Brock/Gross. Clark is just straight better than them all and i'd say even with Tomasello in terms of skills. Would hate to see any of those guys get a 'freebie' when Clarks hurt, like McDonoughs SR Year.

I think Carton has flipped the switch mentally, he looks much more confident this season. Hopefully he uses this tournament as great fuel to his fire going forward.

Sorensen, gets me nervous with his close matches, but he does what winners do... win.

Kemdawg Millionaire - Gaht Dayum. I knew he had it in him, such a beast. He has great defense, awesome in scrambles. Can get in on the legs faster than flies on sh*t. Really think he will be top 4 this year.

I think we need Marinelli or Young out there. I am leaning towards Young right now. Marinelli is better on his feet IMO, but Young seems to be more complete right now in terms of mat wrestling, and scrambling. He also is a great sized 165, whereas Marinelli seems to be smaller. I think Young could actually compete for a Low AA podium spot right now, this season. Young goes now, Marinelli shirts to sharpen his skills and develop physically. Young redshirts next season, in order to prepare for 174.

Gunther is better than his showing here, not too impressed, honestly I think maybe the mental aspect got to him, might have been wrestling not to lose instead of wrestling to win, knowing that his starting spot might be in danger. He didn't do himself any favors.

I feel that in 1.5 years, after Sorensen graduates, Kemerer will be a fine sized 157, Marinelli will be a fine sized 165 and Young will be a fine sized 174.

Meyer, had a few classic Meyer slip ups, I'm not too worried with him, honestly we just need Meyer to come to B1G's and NCAA's with his game face on, we need him to get on the podium again.

Brooks was kind of disappointing in his Jackson match, but I'm glad he avenged his loss in the 3rd place match. Same for Brooks as Meyer, really hope he can get on the podium again, really hoping for a mid AA, but if I'm being honest I think anywhere from 5th-R12 is realistic right now.

Wilcke, just keep getting better young man. Hopefully he is seasoned enough by NCAAs to win us a few matches, and go on a backside run to R12, maybe even low AA. He hasn't really gotten blown out at all this year, been right in every match. He is skilled on his feet, just undersized.

Stoll, GREAT return. Awesome to have you back Stollhouse. I think with a little more mat time under his belt, he beats Hall and wins the title. Oh well, move forward. I'll take Stoll in the rematch. Think he looks as good as where he left off when he got injured last season. Looks like a 4-6/7 range. Hoping for the upper end.

Great Tournament Hawks, all without a big time leader in Cory Clark.

Nice write up Lax. What are we going to do when you are back in class

I'm not worried with slip ups by Young and The Bull. Very impressive in my opinion. Guys named Metcalf, Ramos and Gilman have been pinned later in their careers. It happens. I was impressed by how aggressive they both were as a whole for the tournament. Tough match here and there, but overall aggressive! Futures bright - include Kem, Warner, Lee, Gavin, Murin, Happel and co.!

The NCAA publishes a video to highlight points of emphasis and interpretations of rules. Link to video is below. Start at 13:40 for discussion on reaction time and control. The video is very clear that reaction time still exists, at the discretion of the referee, in all but two specific circumstances: 1) in rear-standing position, and 2) locked hands while on the mat. I would sincerely hope all NCAA officials are aware of this.....

In my opinion, Berger did not control the second ankle beyond reaction time so the call of no takedown was correct.

Great post, Lax. Sadly, I don't think Cory will get back all that close to 100% this season. Maybe he surprises us all and gets his national title, but I think it would be quite a feat if he did. I think he'll struggle to hang with the top guys with the injury.

Bummer, because with Cory at 100%, this crew has an outside shot at a team title. Without a healthy Clark, totally different ballgame. Cruel sport sometimes. Well, always a cruel sport, in a sense.

I don't think it's even a matter of opinion. On replay, it's clear that Berger never controlled the second foot. It was continually slipping through his grasp; he never actually had a grip on it. No control = no takedown. It was close but pretty clear on replay, IMO.

Furthermore, having overruled a Kemerer TD, I think it would have been poor form for the refs to uphold Berger's without clear evidence that it was 2.
