Looks interesting and to be quite a good time. Any recommendations on can't miss activities while there?

If you like vintage, antique gas and steam engines, you will have a fabulous time. They have demonstrations of things like antique steam shovels, veneer mills, and threshing. Plenty to do for kids, provided they have a bit of historical interest. Plenty of good food.

Absolutely no alcohol. No beer tents or similar things.

That sounds strange, is it a dry county or something like that?

No, although it is rather conservative. Much of the revenue comes from food sales by churches. Supposedly they have said they're out if alcohol,is served. There are bars in town, but, the last I've heard, alcohol is banned on the grounds. There is about a thousand campers out there and I'm sure many people drink in their camper and it's no big deal unless someone raises a ruckus.

Do they still have the train robbery?

Its a family type thing. There is a carousel.Vintage cars and tractors. There was a native american show. I have not been in like 15 years.

I don't know, but we took the kids down there about 15 years ago too and in advance of the "robbery" they came on the train and handed out some fake cash to be able to give to the robbers. They also appropriately warn people that the pending robbery is fake, etc, and for parents to be prepared to handle their kids, etc.

Well a few minutes later the bad guys jumped on the train and started shooting their guns and yelling and when they loudly asked for everyone's money...my oldest son, about 6-8 years old then, shot his hand out so fast with his bills clutched in it that everyone started laughing on the train...including the bad guys/robbers.

We still laugh about that to this day.

When I was a kid, I took my own pop pop gun (the kind that shoots the cork on a string) and took out a couple of the baddies. I was a hero.

As for the event, it's a fun family thing. You can easily do it all in a day. Make sure to ride the trolley to the frontier village. There's a nice display farm there and the kids can make rope. There's also a few cabins and shops with living history presentations.

If it's hot, prepare for a dusty, hot day. All the roads are dirt. They water them pretty often, but you can only do so much. You can bring your own food or water, and there are plenty of vendors.

when I went like 20 years ago we were on the square downtown, looks like they must have moved it to a big field out in the country, or it was there also back then and I did not make the country scene

Its always been out at the fairgrounds. However a lot of people park around the downtown and take the shuttle buses.

Yep. There's a flea market on the square, but the official reunion festivities go on at the grounds on the south side of town.

It's been many moons since I've attended. Used to go with my aunt and uncle almost every year. The robberies were always the highlight and trying to get a shell casing or some fake money as a souvenir. It was always fun when I was a kid, but I would hate it as an adult I think. Take the train over to the "Native American" section and get some kettle corn.
