Some can quibble over the details, but the facts are the facts, Bob Stoops NEARLY became the new head coach of the Iowa Hawkeye Football team back in December of 1998. Therefore, in a not too hard to imagine alternate timeline, Bob Stoops was announced as the new head coach of the Hawkeyes and Mike Leach was named the new offensive coordinator.

Having The Pirate as Iowa’s OC would have been a WILD ride, and who knows where he would have taken us, or how long he would have stuck around. Of course fate would say otherwise, and it was never meant to be. I hadn't thought about it before this week, but it is interesting to think about how close his career path was to intersecting with the Hawkeye Football program.

College football has had many great coaches. But one of the things that has made college football fun for decades is the characters in it. Men like Woody Hayes, Bo Shembechler, Hayden Fry, and many others. Mike Leach was a character and he will be missed. Football needs it’s characters.
