I always find it interesting how the sports writers for the opponent view the game.

Chip Scoggins is a sports columnist for the Minneapolis Star Tribune. He's been at the newspaper for nearly 19 years.

His story:

P.J. Fleck's choice of cautious play-calls over boldness backfires again

Riding Mohamed Ibrahim only took the Gophers so far, when it was clear field goals weren't going to cut it against the Hawkeyes.

P.J. Fleck reacts after an Iowa interception late in the fourth quarter Saturday

The Gophers got Hawkeye'd. Again.

They fell into the trap. Again.

Same old, same old.

Play cautious, make killer mistakes, lose late.

Coach Kirk Ferentz didn't leave his timeouts in Minneapolis this time. He left the Gophers clutching a mountain of regret.

The Gophers were officially eliminated from Big Ten West contention on a frigid Saturday night in the most Gophers-way possible.

They gave the Iowa Hawkeyes an opening and their nemesis did what they so often do. They turned mistakes into their own gold and strutted home with the bronzed pig that has basically become a rumor on the Minnesota side of the border.

The Hawkeyes claimed their eighth consecutive victory over their rivals, a 13-10 triumph featuring a fourth quarter that deserves its own oral history.

P.J. Fleck fell to 0-6 against Ferentz in his Dinkytown tenure, and No. 6 goes down as another squandered opportunity.

Fleck has become Sisyphus when facing Ferentz. The boulder keeps rolling back down the hill.

"We had our chances," Fleck said. "In fact, we had a lot of chances. We just didn't capitalize on those chances."

The Gophers rushed for 312 yards and won time of possession by 10-plus minutes and had the game within their grasp. And then Iowa sneaked in and stole their wallet. Poof, gone.

This loss belongs in the category of self-inflicted, not the result of being overmatched by a superior team.

The Gophers missed a 34-yard field goal after an ultraconservative coaching sequence in the first half. They lost a fumble at the end of what seemed destined to be an iconic drive. They dropped an interception deep in Iowa territory right after the fumble.

And when forced to pass the ball after ignoring it in the second half, disaster struck — an interception with two minutes left that set up a winning field goal.

"They force you to beat yourself," Fleck said. "We happened to be another victim."

The Gophers tried ride to Mohamed Ibrahim to glory. Ibrahim poured his heart into his final home game, with 39 carries for 263 yards, but a fumble on his 14th rushing attempt on a 16-play drive gave the Hawkeyes hope and that's all they needed.

Ibrahim is an extraordinary talent. He cannot do it alone.

He threw his best punch at one of college football's elite defenses, but eventually, the Gophers needed a timely completion and couldn't do it, providing more evidence that Fleck's Stonehenge offensive approach must evolve.

Freshman quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis completed one pass in the second half. One. On eight attempts.

Required to throw on third-and-7 late in the game because they were outside field-goal range, Kaliakmanis' pass got deflected and intercepted by linebacker Jack Campbell, who returned to the Minnesota 45.

The door was wide open at that point. The outcome felt inevitable.

A long completion set up Iowa's game-winning field goal range.

Fleck's conservative nature emerged again late in the first half when the moment screamed for him to be aggressive. Ibrahim rushed for 65 yards on a drive that stalled in the red zone.

Offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca called a pass play on third-and-1 from the Iowa 16. Kaliakmanis' pass to Le'Meke Brockington nearly was intercepted.

Fleck opted not to go for it on fourth down, even though Ibrahim had knocked Iowa's defense back on its heels.

A year ago, Fleck played for field goals at Iowa, and it backfired. This decision did, too. Matthew Trickett's 34-yard field goal missed wide right with 38 seconds left until halftime.

Fleck's decision might have been influenced by him having already used all his timeouts. He called his first timeout early in the game to mull a fourth-and-1 decision. He ended up punting.

Fleck had to burn his second timeout when his defense showed confusion. He called his final timeout with 11:08 left in the half when he noticed something askew with the offense.

Those sequences made the Gophers look disorganized. Then they turned overly cautious. Then they leaned on Ibrahim to carry them to the finish line.

That formula nearly worked but close doesn't count.

Eight losses in a row is a trend. An ugly trend. And the Gophers keep falling into the trap.

Uh....'Required to throw on third-and-7 late in the game because they were outside field-goal range,'?

Pretty sure Mo was AVERAGING 8 yds each time he toted the Rock, and there is no way he was going to fumble again at that point in the game....;)

pj had the correct gamplan though he should've spelled ibrahium more. 14 runs by the same rb on a single drive against a physical team like iowa is borderline player abuse but blaming the loss on fleck of being conservative is nonsense if not downright ridiculous.

Late in the first half, Ibrahim rushed for 65 yds on a drive that entered the red zone. Minny, for some reason, called a pass play on 3rd & 1 from the Iowa 16.

I literally said "thank you" in the game thread.

PJ then decided to not go for it on 4th and 1 and brought out the FG unit. Minny's 34-yard FG attempt was wide right with 38 seconds left until halftime.

Huge, wasted opportunity for the Goofs right there.

Lmao, air it out against the Iowa Defense with your backup QB and the game wouldn't even have been close.

And a true freshman QB, at that.

Like I said in the orig post, it's always interesting to see how the "other side" viewed the game. This guy has been a beat writer & now a columnist for the Minneapolis paper for 19 years.

I doubt Chip Scoggins could coach a 5th grade flag football team to a victory. Fleck is not responsible for the 2 turnovers and missed FG that really cost them the game.
This, the game teetered in the balance the whole game and a turnover was and did decide it.
As a fan it was excitingly brutal to watch for me. Glad the hawks won.

I believe he’s talking more about going for it on 4th down vs more passing, though he did mention that. They ran for 312 yards. That pass on 3rd and 1 and then the missed field goal can not be explained. All the analytics would say go at that point, especially with that line and Ibrahim. And running him 13 or 14 times in a row, even though they were gashing us, was just flat out dumb. We honestly had no business winning that game based on stats. But as usual Iowa defies all the rules.

Well, local media types much like fans, have a tendency to dramatically over simplify what they “think they” saw !

Iowa State fans like to pretend like they would just beat Iowa if they didn’t play “Iowa’s game” ….

The reality is, as I said years ago, when queried about what it would take to win in Ames! High end defense, ST and a solid running game. Hell they are Iowa, just not as good!

Running the ball, like Minne consistently runs the ball is winning football period!

On a related note, I’ve read the message board of almost every team we played this year with the exception of Nevada, UM & tOSU….

In some fashion, most of these boards, or at least the loud obnoxious minority…think it’s time for the coaches to move on or be fired, they think their team generally sucks, but yet think they should win every damn game they play & the media is just an extension of that!

As much as I'm irritated by the caricature that is PJ Fleck ... the dude can definitely coach the game of football. The Gophers have emerged as of late as a legitimate contender for the B1G West division. Part of that is premised EXACTLY on PJ's choice to play grind-ball with a "Stonehenge" O. Some of these sports writers don't have a clue!

Tough call there. With no timeouts and a terrible passing offense you are very unlikely to get in the endzone.

I think I would have kicked it as well. To me is says more about awful use of his timeouts.

“it was clear field goals weren't going to cut it against the Hawkeyes.”

He clearly hasn’t watched Iowa football this season.
Fleck at Minnesota is the gift that keeps on giving.

Talks a great game and chokes at crunch time.

But Gopher fans think he's better than what they've had?

LOL

Mason pretty much had the same results, but with less bravado.

That one and the 4th and 1/2 yard punt from his own 38 in the first quarter were gifts for Iowa. Iowa scored its only TD of the game following that punt and got a 10-0 lead. And the decision to kick a FG on 4th and 1 from teh 16 was also a gift to Iowa. Couldn't stop their o-line and Ibrahim, and they pass on 3rd and 1 followed by a missed FG. If you are going to play like Minnesota plays, you are going to be in 4th and short situations. Being conservative in those situations doesn't support the way he wants to play.

He did the same thing in 2021 as well. He seems overly petrified of Parker and KF's way of playing, and weirdly tries to be even more conservative than Iowa. Meanwhile, KF is over there going for 4th and 2 from the Minnesota 42 yard line on the Iowa TD drive. Converting and ending up with 7 points instead of a punt. KF took a calculated risk with the wind in the first quarter and it paid off bigly.

Exactly! If you’re going to run 90% of the time you need to be willing to go on 4th downs, especially in favorable field position. Not very often Kirk wins those kind battles against other coaches. 😏

All that PJ rah rah crap really makes it fun to beat them. As hard as it was to watch the Hawks squeak out a 13-10 victory. And we have lots of Offensive issues.

That had to be a BRUTAL way to watch your team lose as a MN fan. Which makes this a satisfying W for Hawkeye fans!

Gopher tears! Have fun rowing them boats

Tough rowing this time of year.

How many other coaches run onto the field ahead of their team? PJ is ego driven.
