Misinformation abound! As several reporters lie about Non-existent filibuster.

Warren is a dope, but the fact remains the measure failed in the cloture vote, which is the vote to end debate.
That’s a filibuster even if a majority support the filibuster.
They didn’t actually vote on the legislation. It would have failed had they agreed to end debate, but it never got that far, because a majority refused to end debate on the bill.
Wasn't there a Dem involved? I mean, since we are being that specific in the semantics. It was a Bipartisan filibuster, I guess. Not a GOP one. Silly I know. But that's the point. They want to pain it as a loss due to not being able to get there rather than not having enough support.

As for Warren, every time she jumps into the social issues she falls flat on her face. When she sticks to fiscal/ monetary policy, there isn't a better politician in the country, IMO. She had all the momentum going into this week with her approach on inflation. Then she goes and pisses it away. She did the same thing in the campaign when she went all in on the trans "say their name" nonsense.

The point is that since Obama, republicans have blocked almost everything by filibuster, so dems can’t win with 51 votes, but they need a filibuster proof majority of like 60. And because the Senate is so fvcked up because it gives states like North Dakota an equal number of senators to a state like California, it ensures a small minority can overrule and rule. Most all tiny and small populations states are red. There’s no more anti-democratic body in the developed world than the US Senate. It is designed to make the will of even a super majority of American voters be ignored by the elites. It is a relic of slavery.
It’s truly a beautiful concept that keeps the will of states with large populations from misappropriating funds to only benefit their home states. Pretty much the foundation of this country is the US Senate and electoral college. Without it, the union would no longer exist. But sure, slavery! LOL

Some folks should be getting a call from the truth ministry any moment now. Yes. Article is from FOX.

Various reporters incorrectly claimed that the Senate vote over a Democrat abortion bill was halted by a filibuster on Wednesday.

The Women’s Health Protection Act. which intended to guarantee abortion access throughout the nation, failed to reach the 60 votes required for it to pass. The final vote was 51-49 across party lines with West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin joining the 50 Republicans in voting no.
Although the bill failed to reach majority support, some reporters described the vote as failing to be passed due to a filibuster from Republicans.

Associated Press White House reporter Zeke Miller reported on the vote tweeting, "Senate Democrats' bill to write Roe v. Wade into law blocked by GOP-led filibuster as Supreme Court weighs abortion case."

CNN’s Chief Congressional Correspondent Manu Raju similarly tweeted, "49-51, Senate Dems fall 11 votes shy of breaking a Republican-led filibuster to advance bill on abortion rights. Manchin the lone Democratic NO vote. No Republicans voted in the affirmative."

ABC News Coordinating Congressional Reporter Trish Turner later wrote, "Republicans successfully filibuster the Dems' abortion rights bill. Schumer says after that this is just the beginning of votes on this issue."

The pattern continued outside of Twitter with an MSNBC report of the vote by Steve Benen describing the vote under the headline "GOP filibuster derails bill to codify Roe v. Wade protections."

"The Women’s Health Protection Act, designed to codify Roe v. Wade protections, was derailed today by a Republican filibuster, but the fight isn’t over," Benen wrote.

NBC’s Sahil Kapur also promoted the headline "Senate Democrats' bill to keep abortion legal nationwide falls to GOP-led filibuster."

The misleading description of the vote extended to Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who called for ending the filibuster shortly after the vote.

"I believe in democracy, and I don't believe the minority should have the ability to block things that the majority wants to do. That's not in the Constitution. What we’re talking about right now are the individual rights and liberties of half the population of the United States of America. I think that’s enough to say it’s time to get rid of the filibuster," Warren said.
Several commentators called out this framing of the vote, ignoring that the bill couldn’t even reach majority support in the Senate.

National Review senior writer David Harsanyi tweeted, "Filibuster. Also, Dems don't have the votes to pass it with a simple majority."

National Journalism Center Director Becket Adams wrote, "the bill didn't codify Roe and it wasn't blocked by a filibuster. it failed to get 50 votes. but other than that, some solid work by the AP."

Media Research Center Deputy Managing Editor Nick Fondacaro responded to Miller’s tweet noting, "This is the president of the White House Correspondent Association. Everything about this is a lie. It wouldn’t have codified Roe and it wasn’t blocked by a filibuster. Why are you lying?"

The Women's Health Protection Act originally passed in the House in 2021 but was later blocked in the Senate in February 2022. Several liberals have criticized Manchin for refusing to vote with the Democrats in favor of the bill

I especially like the part about the constitutional scholar tweeting about civics teachers as if they still exist.

Warren doesn’t understand the purpose of prices, nor how they are arrived at in a market economy. She doesn’t see them as a needle indicating supply and demand, but levers that should be pulled by politicians.
If she had her way and corporations reduced prices create a profit level that made her happier, all the newly printed money would just help consumers empty the store shelves.
We have centuries of history to draw upon regarding inflation and price controls.
She’s demonstrably ignorant of that history.

I havn't been keeping up on this because I knew neither would pass due to filibuster. Can you give the cliff's notes on what is in each and what the differences are?

I wasn't aware Collins/Murkowsky put forward a bill.
The bill put forward would do away with any state law that prohibits elective abortions prior to 23-24 weeks (viability) not sure how many states fall into that category but the Mississippi law which initiated the overturning of Roe was 15 weeks....

Europe is basically between 12-20 weeks with their abortion laws.

It'd do away with requirements to get a ultra sound prior to abortion that some states have implemented....or additional appointments/counciling some states require.

In a nutshell it's more it goes past Roe because all those state laws were passed with Roe and Cassey in place...

Here's the bill...

SEC. 4. PERMITTED SERVICES.

(a) General Rule.—A health care provider has a statutory right under this Act to provide abortion services, and may provide abortion services, and that provider’s patient has a corresponding right to receive such services, without any of the following limitations or requirements:
(1) A requirement that a health care provider perform specific tests or medical procedures in connection with the provision of abortion services, unless generally required for the provision of medically comparable procedures.
(2) A requirement that the same health care provider who provides abortion services also perform specified tests, services, or procedures prior to or subsequent to the abortion.
(3) A requirement that a health care provider offer or provide the patient seeking abortion services medically inaccurate information in advance of or during abortion services.
(4) A limitation on a health care provider’s ability to prescribe or dispense drugs based on current evidence-based regimens or the provider’s good-faith medical judgment, other than a limitation generally applicable to the medical profession.
(5) A limitation on a health care provider’s ability to provide abortion services via telemedicine, other than a limitation generally applicable to the provision of medical services via telemedicine.
(6) A requirement or limitation concerning the physical plant, equipment, staffing, or hospital transfer arrangements of facilities where abortion services are provided, or the credentials or hospital privileges or status of personnel at such facilities, that is not imposed on facilities or the personnel of facilities where medically comparable procedures are performed.
(7) A requirement that, prior to obtaining an abortion, a patient make one or more medically unnecessary in-person visits to the provider of abortion services or to any individual or entity that does not provide abortion services.
(8) A prohibition on abortion at any point or points in time prior to fetal viability, including a prohibition or restriction on a particular abortion procedure.
(9) A prohibition on abortion after fetal viability when, in the good-faith medical judgment of the treating health care provider, continuation of the pregnancy would pose a risk to the pregnant patient’s life or health.
(10) A limitation on a health care provider’s ability to provide immediate abortion services when that health care provider believes, based on the good-faith medical judgment of the provider, that delay would pose a risk to the patient’s health.
(11) A requirement that a patient seeking abortion services at any point or points in time prior to fetal viability disclose the patient’s reason or reasons for seeking abortion services, or a limitation on the provision or obtaining of abortion services at any point or points in time prior to fetal viability based on any actual, perceived, or potential reason or reasons of the patient for obtaining abortion services, regardless of whether the limitation is based on a health care provider’s degree of actual or constructive knowledge of such reason or reasons.

Basically the Murkowski/Collins bill would allow current state restrictions to stay in place.

In the end I think it was a mistake to forward this bill....DOA.

As far as the political angle....it doesn't even bolster the Filibuster argument because it lost 49-51

You do realize the senate is not the house right? California does have much more pull in congress than Iowa or north Dakota.

It's not at all messed up to give equal representation to states in the senate. Laws should not be easily changed, that's the whole point.

I'd still revise the senate so that every state has to select a D and an R for the senate, and nothing can be passed with less than 55 votes. Ever. 50 Ds, 50 Rs, and you have to gain 10% of the other party's support to get anything done. I'd leave the house as is.

This....if you're going to make major changes there should be a mandate....

Not a bare 51-49 majority....

If we went 51-49 or 50-50 with the VP we'd vacillate back and forth every 2-4 years.....

Warren is an idiot when it comes to all issues. I'm not sure how you could seriously say anyone who supports increased government spending, and forgiving student loans is good on fiscal policy. When you add monetary policy to the statement, it makes me wonder if you know who is responsible for that, and how Warren figures into it.

I'm not saying anything other than she is very popular when she's championing consumer rights and attacking the wealthy and she loses all of that when she delves into the social issues.

It is not really that surprising when the senators are Democrats, only North Dakota and Wyoming are the real problems at this point. The lack of understanding in regards to the role of the US Senate is always interesting
It's sad that immigrants studying for the U.S. citizenship test get better civics training than people born here. A failure of our education system.
