More annoying? First Down or Incompletion?

More annoying?

I don't know if I am annoyed by it; but the one that I think is silly is when a receiver drops a ball and the DB (who didn't really do anything to break up the pass) wags his finger like it is a no-no to throw his way. If he breaks up the pass, then it is fine; but, have seen DB's do this when it was clearly just a drop by the receiver.

Yup...that's more what I'm talking about. What spurred this was the Vikes receiver just getting up and doing the first down thing all theatrically...and he was a yard and a half short.

I thought this was going to be a thread about whether it's more annoying when the announcer says, "That's another Golden Gopher....FIRST DOWN!!" or when the Denver Broncos do their "In...Com...Plete!!!" after every incomplete pass.

I do like it when Matt Vandeberg does the first down signal. In fact, I like that a lot.

Neither one really bothers me unless the team is way behind. If you're down by 3 touchdowns and you celebrate a first down, you're an idiot.

I saw an article where MVB does this to honor his best friend who used to do that first down move routinely when they played together in high school. The friend died tragically in an accident and ever since MVB does it in his memory.

Did not know this. Now I'm even more glad I like it when he does this.

What I find most annoying is when my team is down by a lot, and they celebrate when they stick the run on 2nd down.

I went with the 1st down thing, because it's newer. It's only become prominent in the last couple of years. The incomplete motion has been around forever.

Of course, the CORRECT answer was not offered as an option, which is the infinitely more annoying "throw the flag" motion every time that a receiver or DB feels like there was illegal contact, which is pretty much every single pass play.

Pretty sure we can all thank Cris Carter for starting that one.

His friend was an idiot and he should stop doing it.

Unfortunately mvb only gets to do it twice a year so the upside is it's not enough to be annoying.

YS didn't you post this exact thread before? Or do I need to run over to the ADD thread?

Actually, the first down thing is much older.

Anyone want to guess who started it? I'll give you a hint. It was Miami Hurricane Randall Hill. He did it with the Cardinals every damned time. That's why I've hated it. Him.

Didn't have near the prominence of the other gestures until this season, at least in college. I don't watch much NFL.
