you can’t always get what you want!
For the third or fourth time in the past 3 years, Iowa is suffering from ANOTHER outbreak of “bird flu”! This flu destroys turkey and chicken farms as well as hindering egg production....all adding to the INFLATION problems already facing the nation.
It is time to assess the blame where the blame lies.....Sec of Ag Mike Naig and Governor Kim Reynolds! Imagine to outcry from Iowa Republicans and the Farm Bureau if Chet Culver was still Governor or a Democrat was in charge of the State’s Ag department.
It is time....far time, that Iowa Republicans use the government for its intended use....to keep Iowa residents safe.
. Come on Kim, you got the numbers....now earn your damn pay!

Probably due to the explosion in the Canadian Goose population. The pond down the street from me must have had 400-500 last week. We need more goose hunters and a McGoose sandwich at McDonalds.

I apologize in advance but can't resist ...

I guess we need a fence on our northern border, or boarder as it is commonly written.

The other day I was in the produce section at HyVee and saw a chicken wearing a mask but she had pulled the mask down below her beak to where it was only covering her wattle.

Might as well not even wear the mask if that’s how you’re going to wear it.
LOL. There are some people who do look better in masks worn that way. Maybe a vanity thing ... a fashion statement ... or a security blanket.

Will GOPers and anti-vaxxers buy eggs and chicken meat from vaccinated chickens?

Avian flu vaccines for poultry are "a thing" in other countries...

More tracking data from infected wild birds is needed before this new research can benefit the poultry industry, but researchers are simultaneously making strides in the development of risk transmission models and vaccines.
While some avian flu vaccines for poultry are already being used in other countries, including Mexico and Egypt, the United States has yet to authorize their use.
The tracking study was a cooperative effort among the USGS, University of Delaware, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and University of Georgia. The group has been tracking uninfected wild bird movements for years and compiling the data in transmission interface models, which will eventually allow egg and poultry producers to calculate risk in their individual counties.
“Our group is continuing to develop transmission risk models for each week of the year,” Sullivan said. “We are hoping these transmission interface models will be the first stage of helping prevent spillover events, especially at the county level.”
If you want to track the risks like this, someone's gotta pay the taxes to fund the infrastructure for it. Will GOP Congresspersons support this? Because I doubt the TEA/MAGA folks will jump onboard with "bird tracking"....

What do the "less government interference" folks have to say on this topic?

Put masks on the birds and don't let them go to school!

What more can tehy do besides euthanize to try to prevent spread? If they're getting it from wild birds, they can't really try to vax wild birds.

This. Virus is being spread by migratory wild birds. 48 million birds culled across 37 countries in Europe and 53 million birds culled across 46 US states.

But, yeah, let’s blame Kim.

They can take measures to keep their flocks separated from where they can get exposed.
Lots of information provided by various government and university entities.

State governments can assist, as well. Iowa does have folks working on this; but if those entities don't get adequate funding, they cannot be very effective at it.

We have had Canadian geese in droves for decades in Iowa BN…they shit everywheee and are a “protected” species….God knows why….this is the third 3-4 substantial outbreak of avian flu in the past 5-6 years, yet the problem is still with us. Why? Obviously, those in charge don’t give a shit.
We need some leadership from the State Capitol.

My weekly Farm Bureau newsletter recently had a story about a farm in Franklin County, and its struggles to keep their turkeys safe. Going off memory the family essentially broke into two groups, with teams working the various poultry barns. They didn’t meet for many months in person. Some birds were culled, but they were able to build up the flock by keeping a tight quarantine. Wild birds were kept away with physical barriers and noise makers.

Thing is it is the Fed's that continue to protect the overpopulated Geese and also the USDA that controls any avian vaccine programs. What are your suggestions for any Governor on this?

Ya, there's plenty to blame kim on, but this ain't it.

The virus spreads easily, it mutates, and we don't have approved vaccines like some other countries do.

Tracking it is quite useful in informing farmers where it is and to take measures to limit their flock exposure. If a farmer has poultry, and goes duck/pheasant hunting, might be a good idea to quarantine your clothing, etc if you have the virus in your area or where you hunted... Some reasonably simple measures can go a long way.

But the problem is in Iowa! Perhaps the governor needs to LEAD on this one but it might piss off her base a bit.
I don’t farm…I don’t raise chickens, turkeys or harvest eggs…but the answer to this problem is certainly more hers and Naig’s than it us Biden’s or Vilsack’s.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The deadly avian influenza outbreak that began earlier this year has now killed more than 52 million birds across 46 states, making the spread of the disease the worst poultry health disaster in United States history.
The new record surpasses the tally of 50.5 million bird deaths reached during the bird flu outbreak of 2015. Only Alabama, Louisiana, Hawaii and West Virginia have not recorded a case since the spread was first officially tracked in February.

The ‘H’ in HROT stands for hyper-partisan, apparently.

What are your suggestions for any Governor on this?

Provide the best realtime tracking information on Iowa's websites from the agencies doing that; support that effort by having state employees tasked with being engaged on it. Outreach efforts, etc.

Are those agencies adequately funded in Iowa? Because it seems the Governor has cut lots and lots of state budgets, and if this is one of the agencies/positions not adequately funded to help prevent the spread, then there is some responsibility there.

It’s costing Iowa’s producers a lot of money and increasing inflationary pressure. All her fault? No. Something that needs more attention and multi state / federal cooperation? Yes.

The USDA is tracking the data along with the States and USDA personnel in those States. This is one of those issues that has to be coordinated at the top level because a flock of geese can go from Minnesota to Iowa to Nebraska in a matter of hours.

Thanks, Biden. I guess egg prices are going up again.

More federal overreach. The affected states should be able to get together and coordinate a resolution.

Sure; but that doesn't imply the local/state resources should not be actively conveying updated info to farmers.

I wonder how our anti-mask folks are taking this, because masking up and keeping clothing separate when entering poultry facilities are some of the recommended measures to minimize risks to flocks.
