Big Ten satellite radio station was discussing whether Notre Dame would consider having an affiliation with the Big Ten like they do with the ACC. This maybe could allow the Big Ten to get richer on away games and Notre Dame on home games on their independent contract with NBC, Notre Dame could play annual games against Southern Cal and Purdue their chief Big Ten rivals, and maybe rotate
other schools for the other 2 or 3 games.

The B1G won’t put up with a “one foot in the door” status of Notre Dame. They’re either in or out.
The Big Ten main interest is money, and so Notre Dame would bring more money as an affiliate. ACC has benefited with this arrangement.

The B1G loves money, but they don’t need to make some desperate move to make ends meet. That is when you do stuff like that.

No way, no how. The Irish don't have the clout for partial membership in the Big Ten. They did in the ACC.

As GoUIowa posted above, you are in or out. The Big Ten makes enough money to receive a supplicant, even Notre Dame, and tell them to go fornicate themselves.

Sounds like a perfect match for ND, and the SEC. They could play Alabama, and Georgia instead of 'SC & Purdont.

There's no way the B1G bends over and takes it from ND the way the ACC has. Zero chance. Either they're all in or they're not.

The idea that the Big Ten wouldn't entertain this idea probably isn't accurate. Notre Dame is already an associate member of the conference in hockey. They won the Big Ten championship in 2018 and 2019. Similarly, Johns Hopkins is an associate member in mens lacrosse. The precedent for moves beneficial to both parties has been set. I would much prefer Notre Dame as a full member, but if it meant having them in basketball and football and getting an additional paycheck from their NBC package, I could see the benefit of adding them into the fold the way the ACC currently does.

The B10 conference is in the driver's seat as far as their relationship with ND. Certainly they bring a loyal fanbase and many eyeballs, but for the integrity of the conference, I think the B10 needs to dictate the terms they'll agree to. Full membership or nothing IMO, including not scheduling ND in future seasons in the money sports if they opt out.

Either they are in or they are out. None of this halfway crap. Frankly, I’d be fine with them not joining and eventually becoming irrelevant. They need us a whole lot more than we need them.
Gonna agree with this one. The future of big time college football will rest in the power conferences and ND needs to join a conference or be banished into irrelevance. They are only hanging by a thread now. The only reason not to join is fear. Fear of them playing out like Nebby or Penn St. where the glory years diminish quickly due to stronger, deeper competition.

Nobody's giving ND a sweetheart deal.

ND's deal for ice hockey was a unique situation because the Big Ten needed them to form a conference.

Outside of that, they're not getting a sweetheart deal for the rest of their athletics situation; no quasi-independence here.

If ND wants to join, be a full member. If Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, USC, etc. are full members, then nobody's getting a special deal.

This. ND can make the ACC bend over because it's necessary for the ACC's survival. There's no way the B1G would accept a similar arrangement. It's the strongest conference in the country, it doesn't need ND, and there's no way tOSU and Michigan, which are as big if not bigger brands than ND, would be OK with ND getting special treatment.

Yeah, the ACC had no choice because they know their football product is crap and they needed some ND games to try to improve their tv value; even just 2-3 ND visits a year is more valuable than most of their conference games.

Big Ten doesn't need that; you put Purdue-Iowa on FOX and get 3.5 million viewers within 100k of Alabama on ESPN.

You put Iowa-Nebraska on BTN and get nearly 2 million viewers on a cable network that's in 50 million households. Maryland-Michigan State pulls over 2 million viewers. Wisconsin-Minnesota pulled 5 million viewers.

That's before you consider the biggest of brands and add USC to that list.

Big Ten has so many markets and schools with huge alumni bases that it doesn't need to make any sort of desperation move like the ACC. Big Ten is operating from a position of strength here.

Its just an extended death dance, because we all know and they know what happens in time.

Not advocating we give ND a deal. Just keep the door open. It is inevitable they join the Big Ten. In the end there will be two choices, and they aren't going to the SEC. The ACC cannot survive under its current deal. Even if ND gets the $75 million they want out of NBC it is still far behind Big Ten money, and the potential money that could be made with ND in the BIG is crazy. There is a huge opportunity cost there and how long do the ND donors sit there and let the AD leave $30-50 million per year on the table for "independence". How long do the academics get shut out of the BTAA?

The addition of the West Coast schools making the BIG a true national conference, one of them being a rival to ND, should answer the question of them being worried about being pigeonholed into a Midwest conference. The BIG isn't just Midwest anymore. It's NYC, Chicago, LA.

I don't see a problem with them being an affiliate. Sure the B1G doesn't need ND. However, even as an affiliate they bring the conference more revenue. It also hurts the ACC, increasing the likelihood that other programs will want to move to either the B1G or SEC. Once all the major programs are in the B1G or SEC and you need to be a full member to join in the playoffs where is ND going to go?
If being an affiliate benefits both the B1G and ND for the near term and gives increases the chances of ND joining as a full member shortly after...it makes sense.

The stench of arrogance reeks among the B1G and ND elitists. Just get them in the door then pull them in more later.

It sounds like the BiG is not done expanding and I'm sure the BiG will give ND a chance to join. But ND needs the BiG more than the BiG needs ND. Why would BiG teams want to play ND when they don't need to because the money is already there. I wouldn't be surprised to see USC dump ND after joining the BiG especially if the BiG expands to 20 teams. Plus, I think the BiG ten is an all or nothing league, if ND wants to stay independent in football, then why would the BiG want your other sports teams.
