Everyone likes to peg Spencer Lee as Brands successor, Ryan has put in serious work as a coach and recruiter. Guy is going to get an offer somewhere soon I'd think. I'd take him over Perry (comparative age) anytime.

I think it depends how long from now that it happens. After 2024, it's Spencer Lee.

It’s a hard call. There’s no question that Morningstar brings a ton to the program as a recruiter and Coach. He has surely paid his dues and is still around because he is good at what he does. I’m thrilled he’s on staff. I also probably would have said the same for Zalesky back in the late 90’s. My fear is that we repeat the Zalesky/Brands dynamic of the early 2000’s, lose Spencer, and don’t get him to come back to Iowa with all his awesome VT recruits when Morningstar is done. I don’t think we can bet on lightning striking twice like that. Having a clear, agreed-upon succession plan and long-term strategy that takes care of both guys is what they each deserve and what’s best for the program IMO.

I think y’all are getting ahead of yourselves. Brands isn’t an old guy. He’s at least coaching for another 10-15 years don’t ya think? Unless he starts struggling. I guess ya never know what will happen tho but that’s what I’d bet on. Plus Iowa has to be the number 1 or 2 job in the country. I’m sure a ton of great coaches would be interested. I think it’s better to get the best guy rather than the best one with iowa ties.

Having said that I do think Spencer will be or should be taken care of by iowa. Need to start on that statue ASAP. Hasn’t he said his ultimate goal is to be an AD? If that’s the case then you would think he’d have to leave and get experience somewhere else. But that’s where iowa can take care of him and keep moving him on up the athletic department.
