Since I am officially moving from Iowa to Nebraska I finally need to get Nebraska license plates. I just found out that you have to get your car approved by Nebraska State Patrol before they will issue license plates. Has anybody experienced this?

I have a small crack on the right side of my windshield. It isn't in my line of sight. Will they make me get a new windshield?

I think it's a quick check of major components and check the VIN on the car against the title. You should be fine.

In Indiana they do something similar. Here you just call the non emergency number and request it. They come out to your house, here you pay them $5, they check the vin # and make sure it's not stolen and then they give you a form that they filled out certifying that it's not stolen and you take that with you to register the car.

In Indiana you can also get it done at the DMV if you bring the car with you. Not sure if that's the case in Nebraska.

It cost like $50 to have SafeLite patch the chip. Why not call and get an appointment so you have peace of mind?

In Indiana your car insurance covers it for free if they can patch it without replacing the windshield.

But a crack and a chip are different. His may be too big. I was told that they can generally patch any crack smaller then a dollar bill.

Hmmm. Maybe its different in Indiana but normally you have to have glass coverage through your car insurance carrier before they do it for "free". Even then I'm paying something like $20 a year for glass coverage. I didn't have it the first time we got a chip in the windshield and it cost us like $50 to repair. OP needs to probably get it fixed before it turns into a huge crack and becomes a $350 windshield replacement rather than a $50 repair.

Yeah I just know the insurance covers it here. And here they advertise that most of the time that insurance will cover the entire cost too.

I wonder if it's a state law that car insurance has to cover that here. Because for us it's always been kind of a given. I had a chip on my car windshield a while back and I gave them my insurance info, they came out, fixed it and I never heard from them again.

I doubt the State of Indiana is making you purchase glass insurance but stranger things have happened. More than likely, it probably came with the package you bought or your insurance company tacked it on because most people don't notice a $20/yr increase.

No I mean that the glass insurance is required by law to be a part of the package. Kind of like how the ACA has required all insurance to provide maternity coverage. A car insurance company can't sell insurance without glass coverage much like a health insurance company can't sell health insurance without maternity coverage.

I'm sure I'm paying for the glass insurance in one way or another. There is no such thing as a free lunch, but it might be a legally required part of the car insurance package.

Indiana isn't one of those states. Only Florida, Kentucky, and South Carolina currently waive the car insurance deductible for windshield repair or replacement and thus are referred to as having free windshield replacement or as zero deductible states.

Hmm weird. . . Might have to re-look at my insurance and see if glass coverage is listed and how much it is.

It was probably rolled into the package you bought. The same way they do things for like roadside assistance, rental car payed for, etc, etc, etc. I don't mind paying for glass coverage because we've had a couple of chips/cracks that would have cost a lot more than what we pay for the coverage.

The check is no big deal and you should be fine. However the highlighted section above is a big deal, I have become very concerned about your decision making abilities.
