Mulvey

I think he might have.
But my point is, he should have redshirted. He is very young and would benefit from a RS year, IMO.

He should have redshirted (stayed in school) and what is even more apparent is why Iowa didn't go after a grad transfer while riding the Luka Garza affect with them.

Definitely should have redshirted or not reclassified and they should have gotten another transfer big.

Really disappointing that we didn’t redshirt him this year. He doesn’t even appear close to making a contribution on a good team. To be honest, he should have stayed in high school for his senior season and still redshirted next year at Iowa.

Sorry, I actually thought he did a few good things last night. Just needs more time.

The thinking, I think, is to get him as ready as possible for next year. If that means only spot minutes this year, so be it. It’s very rare to redshirt a college basketball player anymore. They just don’t want to ride the bench with no hope of playing. I get it, I was once young.

Then why not just stay in high school?
Because Fran didn't want the embarrassment of striking out on centers in the portal so he talked this kid into coming early and threw away a scholarship on Ash instead. Given that bad decision he should at least be redshirting

Has he lost his redshirt yet? Can play what 6-8 games and still redshirt?
We talk about this at least a half dozen times every year. Play ONE minute in one game, NO redshirt, unless its medical...These kids don't want to redshirt, and its their decision. I'd be willing to bet that Riley helps Iowa in some games yet this season, especially with Josh O out now.....

So does the kid not get to make that decision? Because he clearly doesn't want to redshirt....

He is still playing at HS speed.
No crime since should be in HS.
Is his development sped up by being in college early?
Hope so cuz he will only have 3 yrs left to max out his talent.

In a perfect world Mulvey reclassifies, and takes a redshirt year. This is an Olaseni scenario replayed. Nunge decided to transfer, and Josh O hadn't proven he was ready to make an impact. Fran had to keep Mulvey, as a big man option, if we had a chance at a decent conference finish, and NCAA appearance.

If we don't solve our Big needs in the early signing period, for 2022, I would expect Fran to do what he doesn't like to. and hit the portal again. I see the Rebracca potential, but that's small ball in the B1G.

This right here. Doesn't he leave it up to the players? Most of them just don't want to redshirt in this day and age.

Plus, it is very viable to think he might come in handy in the Big Ten when they need more bigger bodies to bang and/or some of of the regular rotation guys get in foul trouble or injured. Might as well get him acclimated to the style/pace/speed of Big Ten basketball.

Regarding the transfer portal, I totally agree that McCaffery has to embrace this major change in college athletics. To ignore it is to play the game with one arm tied behind your back. He should assign the task of looking at this list every day to someone on his staff so he might get a jump on the right player. Every other team in our conference can't be wrong about this.
