Muscatine athlete Alphonso Soko excelled last fall on the football field while rushing for over 1,100 yards at the Class 4A level. Several college coaches continue to evaluate the speedy 5-foot-10, 180-pound 2017 prospect and that includes the Hawkeyes.
"It has been Iowa State, Iowa, UNI, and pretty much all the schools around here," said Soko. "I've also heard from Western Illinois and a lot of school like that."
Soko has been in close contact with Iowa over the past few months.
"They asked for my transcripts," Soko said. "I went to their junior day and there's one coming up again. I talked to the coaches."
His trip to Iowa City was something that Soko spoke very highly of.
"It was good," he said. "I liked the coaches and the coaching staff. The weight room and the facilities were all good."
Soko knows what the Hawkeye coaches want him to work on overall.
"They just said to get bigger and stronger," said Soko. "That is the main focus for me. They want to see if I can get bigger and stronger."
There is a lot that Soko likes about Iowa and their program.
"It is a great school and I would love to go there," Soko said. "I like the coaching staff, the head coach, and the players."
Soko has plans to get up to Iowa City once again when he receives more information.
"He said he'd email me when that was coming up again, "he said. "I want to come up to it."
There are a number of potential positions that Soko could play in college.
"It is cornerback, wide receiver, and running back," said Soko. "It is just stuff like that."
Soko has improved the most on a few things this off-season.
"I have worked on my vision and doing more all over the field."
The hope is for the improvements to show this summer for Soko before he hits the camp circuit.
"I'm going to the Nike Opening Camp, the Iowa camp, and a lot of other camps."
Soko will be at Iowa's spring game on April 23.
