Musk and allies have reportedly seized key HR office - and skipped past officials to send mass resignation email

My hot take:

- Asking people to take voluntary layoffs/early retirement/etc is pretty common. This does not bother me. Even at the scale of 2.3 million people. The scale of 2.3 million is pretty high, though.

- Not consulting with the Office of Personel Management is pretty shitty and honestly, seems like DOGE/Musk/Trump in a nutshell. Just ram shit through without thinking about the ramifications for everyone else that has to clean up their mess when they inevitably move on to the next thing.

Even if you don't give them a choice, at least give them a chance to prepare for the mess they're going to create. Musk and Trump can't even give them that.

-also, this seems problematic:

Musk’s team also built the system that sent the email to federal workers - a system that did not exist before Trump took office, the Post noted.

It is the latest signal that Musk’s role in Trump’s new administration reaches far beyond his position leading the Department of Government Efficiency.

But what if, theoretically, 20% of the employees said yes, and went on garden leave immediately? What’s the impact on service levels? Yes, some will claim “It’s government, what service?”

Musk is doing what he did at Twitter, but the federal government is not Twitter.

Obviously that would be a huge problem. It would go back to my 2nd point of it being really shitty that he did not consult with the Office of Personel.

Now that I look up the actual federal employee numbers, which is only about 3 million. Asking 2.3 million to quit is incredibly high. He really should have consulted with them first.

So to be clear, I am okay with the practice, but ya, that number is way too high. I changed my hot take post.

Complete morons. If you're going to reduce force you need to do it orderly so that services are covered and government can still function. There has to be thought and study put into what areas should be reduced and which areas should maintain.

Imagine 10% take this offer and retire, but that 10% is disproportionately in one department, to the point that department cannot function.

So what? Right? What if it's all your meat inspectors and now food can't get to market or doesn't get inspected and tainted meat gets into the food supply? Or worse.

Seizing control of OPM is the first agency listed to bring under control in Chapter 3 of Project 2025.

People should be starting to get a little nervous about what's going on.

How would taking over the OPM further this sort of conspiratory agenda?

Maybe HR could fire malcontents, regardless of union rules and whatnot?

If that's the deal, I want to work for the OPM.

Really? Complete control over who works for you, who doesn’t, personal info?

Why are you assuming good intent here?

What, so he sent out an email to everybody? Even people they'd want to keep?

How do we know this didn't go out to air traffic controllers?
Apparently wrote up a completely new program that they sent the email from.

Elon Musk is completely reinvisioning our government processes. As he sees fit. Apparently he and his staff have installed sofa couches in the OMB cause they have been working 24/7.
