Didn't get a chance to hop in the Lounge during/after the game until this evening and honestly surprised at the number of posts that express more concern than satisfaction. After roughly 7 months of hearing/reading how this was going to be Ferentz's last year, how horrible our talent level is, how it was crazy to think our D would be any better than last year, how so many were not renewing their tickets, etc. 5 - 0 later, returning to the top 25 in a few days, and seems some are simply changing their focus.
We obviously have a lot of room to improve but so many things to be excited about:
- Reaction from B1G Network guys and majority of National Media that have chimed in was how incredible our D looked/played. They were awesome and honestly left some plays on the field.
- While we had some missed assignments on blitz pick-up today, from a 3-4, and LT making his first start, our OL had a pretty impressive push today. Feels like we are very close to being able to run at will which will make us very, very difficult to stop.
- We had 1/2 dozen+ plays in the passing game that were there to make, we just missed them. CJ didn't have his best game today and we still won. That's huge. When he plays like he did last week, we will roll. If we can find ways to win when he struggles, we won't lose many games the this year and next.
- Feels like D is getting their physicality back. Love the edge they are playing with. All three levels.
- Special teams continues to range from good to great. Really solid today, other than miss from MK, and another great day from Kidd.
Bottom line, we found a way to win today, against a top 20 Wisconsin team at a venue that wins are rare. Our passing game is going to improve as the year goes on, a lot. While we certainly may lose a few games this year, we are 2 for 2 in trophy games and after 5 games, still have every goal left on the table.
