The great Paul Hornung, the Heisman Trophy winner and NFL Hall of Famer, passed away today at age 84.
My personal memory of Paul Hornung:
Nov 22,1986 Iowa at Minnesota. Paul was the color commentator on the WTBS broadcast of the amazing Iowa win over Minnesota 30-27. Iowa trailed 17-0 and won on a 37 yard FG by Rob Houghtlin on the final play after he had missed a 51 yarder at the final gun but Minnesota was penalized 15 yards for 12 men on the field. No OT in those days.
For a couple decades I said Nov 22,1986 was the best day of CFB games I had ever seen:Early game was Oklahoma with a big comeback in Lincoln to knock of Nebraska 20-17 and the afternoon game was Jim Harbaugh and Michigan following through on Harbaugh's guaranteeing Michigan would beat OSU and Michigan indeed knocked off the Buckeyes in Columbus 26-24. And of course the night game was the amazing Hawkeye comeback in the Dome.
Iowa had 5 regular season games on TV in 1986, three on WTBS and two on CBS. That beat the entire decade of the 1970s when 3 Iowa games were on tv the entire decade.
