the OL was better than most expected and the depth just got better as it is now a solid 2 deep across the board

the RB's answered the bell as on most boards there were post asking if Iowa could/would rush for a minimum of 100 yards and at most 120 yards. 186 yards between the 3 RB's and a team total of 209 yard with no negative yardage. this with 5 new starters on the OL
LT Kallenberg
LG Reynolds [Wyoming game his only start when Renders moved to center]
C Renders [note Renders got 1 start at center vs Wyoming when Daniels was hurt]
RG Banwart
RT Ferguson

the WR's
Brandon Smith 1st start after playing behind the Meercat
Easley was a JUCO AA who transferred into Iowa and led the team in receptions and receiving yards

the RB's
Sargent JUCO 1st Team AA
Young
IKM
they are the new 3 headed monsters that teams can't focus on just 1 of them.

TE's need to work on the little thing like looking the ball into their hands

QB Stanley should make a big jump with
LT Jackson a 6'7 320 lb FR AA returning to the starting lineup
RT Wirfs a 6'5 328 lb returning to the starting lineup.

the DL is solid and will get deeper with talent this weekend.
the LB'rs now looks to go 2 deep across the group
this will allow the coaches to rotate all season, this what the coaches learned when they went to the U of Georgia where they shared information.
the CB's are also 2 deep

in summary the ability to go 2 deep will allow the players to sustain their level of play all season. in the past the lack of depth has led to the end of season [bowl game] collapse.

Is this who I think it is?

I'm pretty sure between Reynolds and Render they've started more then one game each, but your point is well taken that the line as a group was certainly a work in progress. As for the TE's looking the ball into their hands, we're really only talking about one guy, and it was the same thing last year. Hock caught EVERY bullet that Stanley threw in his direction.

Please just go away

yes Render did start at LG LAST Season but this will be his 1st season as the starting center. Reynolds only start was in one game last season when Render started in place of Daniels, getting starts at one position does not = starting at a new position.

Seems how they had 5 weeks to freshen up before the bowl game, I'd say this is a bogus point.

I feel a lot better about a couple positions that were question marks coming into the season:
Interior DLine
Dbacks
Punter
Returners
Running backs

positions still in question:
WRs
Linebackers - really high on Neiman and Welch after that game but MLB is still in question.

We will be adding some quality depth to the DLine this week. After week ones performance, I am feeling better about the season.

I was very impressed with the TE's (outside of Fant's drops). They did a great job of blocking and took Sutton Smith 1 on 1 a few times and looked good. The quality in both the pass and run game will be a big help for the Hawks this year.

Against most "undersized" DEs ... Iowa's TEs are developing to a point where they can nearly neutralize such guys. That's an understated positive. Furthermore, given the receiving prowess of some of the guys ... it allows for Iowa's 2 and 3 TE sets to be far more "multiple" than what they've traditionally been.

To me, some of the most promising things to see were the quality reps that we got out of Levi Paulsen, Landan Paulsen, Ferguson, and Kallenberger. That really allowed those guys to both build confidence AND gain valuable experience. Furthermore, in order to make sure that they were prepped for the first game ... the must have seen a ton of reps with the #1s. That's huge for guys as it relates to development.

Anyhow, with the return of Wirfs and Jackson ... I'm much more confident that the Hawks have a solid top 8. That's important not only to handle the adversity that can happen within a season ... but also, if guys are impressing the coaches enough, it also means that more guys can see quality reps on a weekly basis ... allowing for the coaches to play around with rotating guys personnel-wise. That can help the O to grind down opponents ... much like we saw happen versus NIU.

Render has 21 career starts, with one of them at center (Wyoming 2017).

Kallenberger epitomizes what it is to be a Hawkeye. He was very emotional in a post game interview after realizing a lifelong dream.
