Nate Stanley will shatter once thought untouchable Chuck Long School Record

There were over 30 QB’s who threw 25+ TD’s in FBS this year. Very breakable record... definitely not untouchable

Only 5 different QBs have ever thrown for more than 20 in Iowa history in a single season. Chuck Long has been the only one to do it prior to 2002, so that shows that the times are definitely changing and it is possible. But until now Iowa's offense never allowed it to be challenged.

1 Chuck Long 27 1985
2 Brad Banks 26 2002
Nate Stanley 26 2017
Nate Stanley 26 2018
5 Ricky Stanzi 25 2010
James Vandenberg 25 2011
7 Chuck Long 22 1984
Drew Tate 22 2005
9 Drew Tate 20 2004

Yeah as others have said, this is likely an indicator of a running game issue spanning the past couple of years. Coaches would probably like a more balanced attack.

At the same time, it’s been a while since Iowa has had a player like Fant to target in the red zone

Career completion percentage and total yards passing won't be caught. Long was nearly 65 percent for his career, Stanley is just a hair under 58 percent. Stanley's TD/Int ratio is stellar at 52-16.

If Stanley keeps this pace, he'll break the record by 4. Not exactly shattering the record.

Since Nate is just a 3 year starter, lets look at Chuck's last 3 years at iowa and Nate's projected stats for his last 3 years at Iowa.

The yards are nearly identical.

The TD/INT ratio? Wow. Nate by a landslide.

Comp....Att....Pct.....Yds....Yds/Att....TD...INT....Player
666....1,145..58%....8,136......7.1..........78.....26......Nate
591.......909..65%....8,281......9.1..........62.....36.....Chuck

Only one stat matters wins. He could throw for 6000 yards this year but if he doesnt win those games who cares.
It just becomes a record like nenbraskas sell out record

Speaking of a running game issue, in 2004 Iowa was down to its 5th string RB. In 2004, yes, the coaches would have liked a more balanced attack, but they had no choice but to throw more. Drew Tate only threw 20 TDs that season.

So I guess Drew Tate sucked too! LOL

What I found a little shocking was Tate's TD number from 2004. Iowa had the worst running game of all time and Tate still only had 18 TDs at the end of the regular season. It's incredible Iowa won 10 games.

And we won a flippin B!G Championship

Talk about pulling a rabbit out of a hat!

That season has to be #1 on KF's list of the 20 because that team could have wilted/folded based on the adversity they faced

Ronnie had hands at the Rose Bowl, but they had been greased.
its amazing how 33 years later we still can't forget that damn Rose Bowl performance...it was gawd awful and embarrassing.

And who was the QB of that gawd awful and embarrassing game? Chuck Long. Not Nate Stanley. Chuck Long!

;)

Everyone know that Nate Stanley is the best QB Iowa has ever had. In fact it is not even close.

Lol so you pulled it out of your a$$

Indeed I did.

However, The Truth found some nice stats.

"Here’s Nate’s TD distribution for all games

1-10 yards 26
11-25 13
26+ 13

Here’s what I found for Chuck for all games that I could find

1-10 24
11-25 20
26+ 27"

Link to these stats? Or did they come out of someone's arse, too?

It would be multiple links since I looked at the box scores of every game. You can double check my information if you’d like. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a little off but it’s not going to be so far off to diminish the point that Chuck’s % of TD’s of 10 yards or less is way less than Nate’s.

how about the links charting Chuck's TD passes for starters?

Guess what? Nate only gets one extra game to break the record, when you do the math.

Nate will only have 35 more projected pass attempts FOR HIS CAREER when compared to Chuck, which is basically one game. Against Mississippi State, Nate had 31 attempts.

The math: 748 attempts for Nate over last 2 years plus another 397 for 2019, which is the 2018 number.

46 games....1,110 attempts--Chuck Long
39 games....1.145 attempts--Nate Stanley (projected)

Excellent research and projection.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a short TD pass - they count 6 points, same as a long TD pass.
Posters were slamming Nate for his short throws & then they claimed that Iowa, under Long, ran the ball when close to the goal tine but under Nate, they threw the ball for TDs

Well, I wasn't. I made the observation that Nate has a lot of short TD passes, but was not being critical.

I didn't post those TD stats. You did. And now you can't provide your source.

I already told you the source. If you’d like to look through box scores of each individual game as I did then be my guest. Chuck’s are a little harder to find so you’ll need to reference the box scores on Wikipedia for each individual season he played. Nate’s are much easier to find. Good luck!

Please provide the box score links that show Chuck's TDs that were 1-10 yds. Supposedly there are only 24 TDs that were 1-10 yds in length.

I don't think you can.

Thanks.

Look, Chuck's name is on the ring of honor in Kinnick. He was a Heisman runner up.

I just don't get why so many like to bash Nate and his accomplishments.

Who’s bashing? Providing statistical information that shows Nate has a higher % of TD’s 10 yards or less is factual. The game has changed, offensive and defensive strategy has changed. I don’t care how Iowa gets the ball into the end zone, and I doubt anyone else does for them at matter.

FWIW- back in the day before message boards, Chuck was affectionately referred to as 'Chuck, save your percentage, Long'.

Then as a senior he became a legend. Why, Rose Bowl.

The peanut gallery was much more forgiving then. We were 4 years off of the dark ages, and competitive with anyone. Now, we're almost 40 years out of the dark ages, and what was once euphoric and fun, is now perceived as 'mediocrity' by many.

Nate is smart. He can't be on Twitter, he ignores the noise coming from other sources AND he gets 9 hours of sleep! LOL

With comparable sample sizes, which applies to Chuck I vs. Nate comparisons, statistics are rarely misleading but they're also rarely dispositive. For example, Nate may end up with more TDs but he won't end up close to career completion percentage or YPA.

Nate is a very good QB with a year left to become a great one. If Nate throws for around 3000 yards, gets the percentage up over 60 for the season, throws 25-30 TDs and Iowa wins a good bowl game (like the Outback Bowl or better) then he'll land as number 2 in career passer in yards and 1st or 2nd in career TDS. A fair minded observer would have to put Nate in the conversation for the second best QB at Iowa (Chuck Long is number 1 and whoever you think is second isn't close).
