When, if ever, has a returning finalist failed to qualify the following season?

Josh Kindig technically didn't qualify but got a wildcard last year I believe but I don't think that's quite what you meant.

Dang, forgot all about looking in our own history. Slaton was the perfect answer.

FWIW, didn't Long go to PSU and finish 3rd after his 2nd place at ISU?

Well then my trivia question sucked then. Saw he finished 7th at the Big12 and he wasn't in the field so I incorrectly guessed he didn't qualify.

Joe Slaton is the current leader in the clubhouse.

Has a reason been given? Injury?

Yes. He got hurt vs. ISU a month or so ago. He was also under performing prior to that. My guess is he will be at 133 next year and 141 isn't out of the question. And a possible redshirt.

He entered the Big12 tournament to save the conference an auto spot and then defaulted out. I guess they awarded the at-large out of policy, knowing they were going to go to the next one when he withdrew from NCAAs.

Good guess on 133, I would think so also. His little brother is a junior in HS and is wrestling 160.

Rutgers redshirting 133 pounder DelVecchio's brother is a freshman at 220 and placed at our states last weekend. Big boy.

Not a finalist but I recall Craig Henning of Wisconsin was an All American and then went 0-2 at B10s the next year and didn't qualify.
He was a finalist, took 2nd in 2007 and 8th in 2006, then the following year I believe didn't qualify.

Alex Dieringer also technically got a wildcard last year, as the Big 12 didn't have ANY Automatic bids. That said, I think they spent more time arguing over who would get the morning coffee than over Dieringer's selection.

MN.HAWK, the changing of the qualifying system was already in the pipeline when the Henning situation happened, although it made things pretty obvious. Big Ten rules meant that the "wildcard" qualifiers had to come from among the ten eighth-place finishers at Big Ten's, as they had to have placed within three spots of qualifying, and obviously, in order to place within three spots of qualifying, you had to have placed, period.
