The NSAA Board of Directors passed a gender participation policy by a 6-2 vote Thursday.

The policy requires students and their parents to show evidence of hormone therapy or gender reassignment surgery before a transgender student would be allowed to participate in sports.

Under the NSAA’s policy, eligibility would be determined by a committee consisting of a physician with experience in transgender health care, a psychiatrist or psychologist, a school administrator from a school not involved in the case and an NSAA staff member.

A health-care professional would have to verify in writing the student’s “consistent gender identification and expression.”

For a male transitioning to female, the policy would require medical documentation that the transgender female has either completed a minimum of one year of hormone treatment or undergone a gender reassignment procedure. The student would have to demonstrate through a medical exam and testing that as a transgender female athlete she would not possess physical or physiological advantages over genetic females of the same age group.

Earlier this week, the ACLU of Nebraska condemned the NSAA proposal as “disrespectful” and imposing “cumbersome and costly” barriers for transgender students who want to participate in sports.

We had a couple of girls that played football (through Jr High) and wrestled (through Jr High). Those girls never had to show they were going through hormone therapy in order to play football. That said they all were light years behind their male counterparts in terms of athletic ability.

I kind of support the males playing any female sport. I remember seeing a story on Real Sports about a male who had become a female and was now playing on a female basketball team (professional). There are a couple other stories of men transitioning to women and participating in woman's sports.

One of the first, and most famous:

Renée Richards (born August 19, 1934) is an American ophthalmologist, author and former professional tennis player. In 1975, Richards underwent male-to-female sex reassignment surgery. She was denied entry into the 1976 US Open by the United States Tennis Association, citing an unprecedented policy that banned trans women. She disputed the ban, and the New York Supreme Court ruled in her favor in 1977 in a landmark decision in favor of transsexual rights.[2] Through her fight to play tennis as a woman, she challenged gender roles and became a role model and spokesperson for the transgender community.

Doesn't a female that was a man originally, still have a huge advantage over normal women? Does becoming a female lower her testosterone count to normal female levels? Men can have counts that range from 300 to 1000, while women have counts that range from 70 down to 2. So even if the guy completes the process to become female, I really doubt that his testosterone will be any where close to normal female levels, and thus he will have a huge advantage on sports.

It's not just that, s/he is going to be - on average - larger, heavier, have greater wingspan/reach, more endurance, etc., etc., etc.
