I would prefer 19th or 20th century history. Would consider earlier if well written.

I won an Amazon gift card at work and am going to order Bernard Cornwell's new book on Waterloo. That's non-fiction (new for him). Need a good historical novel for balance.

If you haven't already read them and like the Napoleonic era, the Patrick O'Brian series is good. That's the series that the movie Master and Commander came from.

In a different vein, Dennis Lehane's The Given Day is quite impressive. Here's the Amazon blurb on The Given Day:

Set in Boston at the end of the First World War, New York Times bestselling author Dennis Lehane’s long-awaited eighth novel unflinchingly captures the political and social unrest of a nation caught at the crossroads between past and future. Filled with a cast of unforgettable characters more richly drawn than any Lehane has ever created, The Given Day tells the story of two families--one black, one white--swept up in a maelstrom of revolutionaries and anarchists, immigrants and ward bosses, Brahmins and ordinary citizens, all engaged in a battle for survival and power. Beat cop Danny Coughlin, the son of one of the city’s most beloved and powerful police captains, joins a burgeoning union movement and the hunt for violent radicals. Luther Laurence, on the run after a deadly confrontation with a crime boss in Tulsa, works for the Coughlin family and tries desperately to find his way home to his pregnant wife.

Here, too, are some of the most influential figures of the era--Babe Ruth; Eugene O’Neill; leftist activist Jack Reed; NAACP founder W. E. B. DuBois; Mitchell Palmer, Woodrow Wilson’s ruthless Red-chasing attorney general; cunning Massachusetts governor Calvin Coolidge; and an ambitious young Department of Justice lawyer named John Hoover.

Coursing through some of the pivotal events of the time--including the Spanish Influenza pandemic--and culminating in the Boston Police Strike of 1919, The Given Day explores the crippling violence and irrepressible exuberance of a country at war with, and in the thrall of, itself. As Danny, Luther, and those around them struggle to define themselves in increasingly turbulent times, they gradually find family in one another and, together, ride a rising storm of hardship, deprivation, and hope that will change all their lives.

Soviet/Stalinist era:

Victor Serge ... either "Unforgiving Years" or "The Case of Comrade Tulayev"

Gillian Slovo ... "Ice Road" The assassination of Kirov, the purges, and later the Siege of Leningrad figure prominently.

Scotland:

George MacDonald Fraser ... "Candlemass Road"

John Galt ... (The real John Galt) "Ringan Gilhaize"

France:

Andrew Miller ... "Pure" set in pre-revolutionary Paris and against the emptying of the Cemetery of Les Innocents

The weight of water by Anita Shreve. It combines fiction and historical fiction about a multiple murder on Smuttynose Island off the coast of N.H. If you come from Norwegian fisherman stock this might interest you more. It's also somewhat literary.

Read "Time & Again" by Jack Finney. It's set in late 19th century Manhattan around the Dakota hotel. Loved that book.

If you like the Civil War era, read Shelby Foote's "Shenandoah".

If you have not read "Once An Eagle" by Anton Meyrer, that ends the thread. Read it.

Jeff Shara has written any number of very good historical novels, including a trilogy on WW2 and a fine book on WW1, "To the Last Man." One thing about his work (and that of his late father, Michael): What he calls "fiction" is what a lot of writers, notably Bob Woodward, calls fact. Shara takes the position that if he includes dialogue, it's fiction. In other words, let's say -- to take a real example -- Eisenhower's memoirs say "I told Patton to go to hell" and Patton's memoirs say "Ike told me to go to hell." Shara depicts the meeting between the two and includes the dialogue, "George, go to hell," said Eisenhower. That, in Shara's view, makes it a work of fiction.

Parser mentioned the 20-book series by Patrick O'Brian about the British navy around the time of the Napoleanic wars, and those are simply fabulous. Think of the Horatio Hornblower novels written by Jane Austen and you get a sense of what they're like.

But "Once An Eagle" is the first choice.

I know its not fiction, but The Devil in the White City is about as good as it gets. I really like Larson's writing. I'm going to pick up his new one on the Lusitania after I finish Roosevelt in the Bad Lands.

Myrer's "Once an Eagle" is one of the best books I've ever read. I've also read most (if not all) of Jeff Shaara. I read Finney's "Time and Again" and the sequel. Somehow I missed Shelby Foote's "Shenandoah," I may go with that.

Building on The Devil in the White City, there are a few event histories that are as good as a novel. "Skeletons on the Zahara" was fantastic, as was "A Crack in the Edge of the World".

You skipped one in the middle, that I just finished. About a famous murder in England and the relationship to Marconi's development of the wireless. Not as good as "White City" but good.

Ken Follett recently published the final book in his trilogy on the 20th century. The first one is good. The second one is OK. The third one flat-out sucks.

Incidentally, if you haven't read his "Pillars of the Earth" that is definitely a "must."

I liked "The March" by Doctorow about Shermans march to the sea.

"City of Thieves" by David Benioff is fantastic. It is a gripping WW II adventure that takes place during the Nazi's siege of Leningrad. Fast paced action from start to finish. Almost a horror novel as it can be quite terrifying. Not a typical Historical Novel, that's for sure.

Fields of Fire by James Webb. The best historical fiction book about Vietnam that I have ever read. Matterhorn, a novel of Vietnam is a close second.

The one you are referring to is Thunderstruck. I read that one as well. Also very good, but you are right that its not as compelling as Devil in the White City, maybe its because of the subject matter. He also had one called 'In the Garden of Beasts' which is about the American Ambassador in Germany from 33-37. I have not read that one yet.

I would also recommend a book called 'Genius of Place' about Frederick Law Olmsted who designed Central Park and a lot of big urban parks in the USA.

I read "In the Garden of Beasts" on vacation. Pretty good. It probably isn't fair to compare these with "White City," though, because it's really exceptional.

Fatherland about the Germans winning WWII and having a Cold War with the United States
If you're interested in that, Philip Dick wrote "the man in the high castle." The Germans and Japanese won, but the Japanese were the ones that colonized the states.

I've read this book. It's a very serious book by a very serious professional journalist. 95% of it is unremarkable history and quite interesting. That's why the part about Roswell comes as such a stunner.

Yup it blew my mind how much detail it went into about our history or top secret military projects. It isn't anything like what most people would think looking at the cover.
