I know....I should upgrade, or I should go back to where you turned a crank and Central asked what number you wanted.

Problem: The past couple of weeks, sometimes the notification for text and phone call works, sometimes not. I'm out golfing the other day, and I hear my phone telling me from my golf bag that I have a text. Later in the day, I discover I've gotten a text for which there was no notification. Mrs. LC texted me, text came through fine, nothing but vibration to note its arrival. Used the house landline to call my phone, same thing -- call went through, but nothing other than a vibration from my iPhone.

I have read the instruction manual, and everything seems to be properly turned on.

Is it busted?

You are one step from using carrier pigeons with the 4. Upgrade now. Not only will the new phone work smoothly, you will be able to act like a smug jag for owning one. It's part of the diabolical power Apple has over us. Every upgrade they offer leads to a less effective device if you don't download them. And, more and more memory is sponged up.

My wife's 5 did that periodically. As long as you haven't slipped into silent mode or whatever, try turning it off and back on. Sounds stupid, sometimes works.

I have been dealing with electronics since I was in junior high, when I first got interested in ham radio. Thus I know that the first -- and often the best -- thing to do is give the offending unit a sharp slap or two. This could be considered a kind of hands-on reboot.

This hasn't helped with the iPhone. Nor has turning it off and on.

So if I upgrade, what do I get? The brand new one that Rush Limbaugh is slobbering about? Or a 6-series?

I love my 6+. For all the reading I do on my phone it was a no brainer. Also hear the bigger phones are easier to use for those that are advanced in years.

Also heard people rave about the Galaxy which looks like the 6+.

I figured you'd have tried the reboot/knock-it-around angle, but it was worth saying if you hadn't. You might also set all your sounds off and then turn them back on. Otherwise, I'd definitely recommend upgrading. As for model, if you're going to do what you did with the 4S and keep it as long as possible, then I'd recommend you just get the new one. It'll buy you an extra refresh cycle down the road....but the 6 is a decent deal at this point and you'll have ApplePay capabilities if you'd use that sort of thing.
