Diving Elk downtown on 4th - Truffle Fries, Goat Cheese Fondue, Sriracha Lime brussel sprouts, simple burger is one of the best around. Good selection of rotating drafts.

For the middle ground I'd say Marto or Diving Elk (can do both if want a couple of beers on 4th Street). For the best local dives, it's Miles, La Juas, or El Fredos in my opinion (with a hat tip to Townhouse, Jerry's Pizza, and Weiner House).
Got an order of them carrots to take home last time I was there. That place is great.

Wheelhouse over by the shithole mall is a great sports bar if that's the vibe he's going for.
I know it's a sin to say this but don't let anyone talk him into Bob Roes. Anything besides the pizza is essentially pre packaged Tyson frozen food. I don't know why everybody goes sex nuts over the place.
