Just got my new Illinois Tollway transponder in the mail. Instead of a plastic device, it is now a sticker with a barcode that is supposed to be stuck on the windshield. I typically use the tollways no more than 3-4 times a year and have no interest in putting the sticker on my windshield if I don't have to. Does anyone have first-hand experience with putting the piece of paper with the sticker on the dash near the windshield like I did with the plastic device? I'll hang up and listen.

(I understand that the sensors read my license plate and I can go online after-the-fact and pay, but prefer to pay in real time with the transponder if possible.)

interesting, I've always done the same thing as you. I'd just set on the dash depending on if we were using my truck or wives car.

how big is the sticker?

I think I would just use that and add another for Mrs QC

Roughly 1 x 3 inches.

Do they just send you the sticker? I went to the website and couldn't find anything about getting stickers sent to us.

We have 3 cars tied to one account so we would need 3 stickers instead of just taking the transponder with us in whichever car we needed it for. I also noticed that the new license plates we got for the new car had a bar code on the front of them. I wonder if that can be read by the tollway meters and that would count as our sticker.

I just got mine too. I'll probably just put it on my dash instead of on the window and see if it works. I drive around with the other transponder on my dash for years with no issues.

from the IL tollway website..

Customers will not be required to switch to the I-PASS Sticker Tag as long as they have a working transponder. As I-PASS transponders reach their expiration dates, the Illinois Tollway will send customers new I-PASS Sticker Tags as replacements.

There is no deposit fee for I-PASS Sticker Tags. For customers with current transponders, the $10 transponder deposit will be transferred into their pre-paid toll accounts once a new I-PASS Sticker Tag is registered to the account.

Once registered to the account, the I-PASS Sticker Tag will be immediately ready to use on the Illinois Tollway and within 24 hours on the Chicago Skyway and other E-ZPass roadways.

Customers will be asked to dispose of old I-PASS transponders in an environmentally sound way, either by returning them to the Illinois Tollway or by going to the Earth911 website where they can search by "lithium-ion batteries" and enter their zip code to find many convenient recycling locations.

I-PASS Sticker Tags are required to be mounted to a vehicle’s windshield near the rearview mirror, and like license plate or city stickers, they are not designed to be moved between vehicles. There is no battery, and they last until removed from the vehicle.

We've received sticker replacements for 2 of our 4 transponders. They are godawful to look at. Not sure why they needed purple and blue flourishes. I'd love to stick it on the underside of my car.

I went to the website and saw I could order new transponders. I was able to order 3 of them and there was no deposit to be paid so I assume that means they will send me some stickers now. I guess I'll find out.

I haven't received a sticker. Interesting. thanks for the heads up.
I activated my sticker. From what QCHawks posted, it seems that I could have kept using the old one if I hadn't. (Note to self, don't act on mail while watching the Sugar Bowl.) I know the plastic one has said been past its expiration date for some time. Maybe those will start failing.

We are in a similar situation as you… we just used the sticker over Thanksgiving and it seemed to work for us. At least the state of Illinois has asked for our car.

Dad had Sun Pass down in Florida and never attached it to his windshield, leaving it in the glove box until he needed it. When on Toll roads, he'd pull the transponder out and physically hold it in the location so it was scanned. Seemed to work fine.

Put this by the sticker to soften the blow of it's looks.

I have an old transponder for one car and the newer stickers for 2 other cars. I did. It mount my sticker and it USUALLY works. I’ve had 2 times where it wouldn’t work and been stuck at the line until I opened my door and they asked for the number on my sticker and it immediately opened.

I get the feeling it will work most of the time but occasionally not work and when you see a car stuck at the till it’s because they hadn’t mounted it. I still refuse to put that sticker on the window since I probably use it less than 20 times a year.

That’s the “old” transponder…the one that has been replaced…..read the OP…..it has been replaced by a “strip” you attach top the windshield…..I have enough shit on my windshield without putting more shit on it. The transponder worked great for us for a number of years……probably why it was replaced….it worked!

Spoken like a true old man.

The old console type cabinet TVs worked just fine as well but smaller better stuff has come out. How bout that 'works just fine' dial telephone?

Not everyone wants a huge as thing on their windshield when a sticker will do....

Next time I want to hear from you asshole, I will phone you…ok?
You are the consummate prick, Gus!
For folks in our situation, the old transponder was fine… use it 3 times a year and keep it in the console the rest of the time..

Yes - buy this from amazon. You can stick the toll pass sticker on this and easily remove and add it back as needed.

Just a guess that since it's a passive RFID sticker, putting the sticker on a piece of paper on the dashboard it will be fine. The readers energize it as they pass through. Same RFID technology as the transponders, just smaller and cheaper.

I've also read now if you have your license plate registered with an account, it will just take a picture and deduct funds automatically anyways. However, I'm not sure if that's at the ipass half price rate or the old cash rate.
