New President at Iowa

Bruce Harreld is the academic from the Harvard Business School. From an athletics standpoint, I think I would have preferred either of the other two.

But, he will probably be good for the academics side of things.

Uh, not really.

He attended Harvard Business school, but his is background is primarily in business. The "academic snobs" are probably crapping their collective pants right about now.

And, no, he's not going to fire Gary Barta tomorrow.

With a business background he may see that strong athletics are a great marketing tool for the university.

But no matter how good a hire he ends up being I am enjoying watching the academic snobs freak out.

Yes, because the last thing needed in academia is academics. What we really need is a business person to come in, trim the fat and outsource positions to India to maximize profitability. Then the U of Iowa can become the private institution for which we have all wished.

Honestly, I hope he does well, but he certainly doesn't have experience in his new environment.

Oh, by academic snobs, I assume you mean the faculty, the university's brain trust, the teachers who open new worlds for young minds, those fools who build their lives and careers around teaching and research and academic inquiry. You mean those snobs?

I would guess he means the type of person who believes what you just wrote.

Or he might be a visionary leader who can propel the university into the future to ensure it is competitive on the U.S. and global stage.

He's a mover and shaker, not an academic-- which is why many of the faculty are freaking out. Board of Regents feel they can work with him, since he is more like they are.

Which is why he has been unemployed for the last 2 years.

Oopps, my bad. He was the "strategic generator of greatness" for an LLC that didn't exist.

Wow. Judging from the article in the newspaper today it sounded like the consensus was that the only finalist that wasn't qualified/wasn't a good fit was Bruce Herrald. It sounded like many people were saying that the consulting firm should be fired for even allowing this guy to be a finalist. It also sounded like the guy had at best "misrepresented" his employment on his resume. So, why doesn't it shock me that fix was in, with Branstad and his best pal Bruce Rastetter hiring the corporate America candidate who lied on his resume as our next President. More politics as usual I guess.

According to the Gazette, the guy faked his CV. Notre Dame fired a football coach for that let alone a University President.

"According to the CV provided by the Board of Regents, Harreld lists himself as managing principal for a firm called Executing Strategy LLC, out of Avon, Colo., advising public, private, and military organizations on “leadership, organic growth, and strategic renewal.”

But no business with that name is registered with the Secretary of State’s Office in Colorado, and representatives with an Avon-area chamber of commerce said they have no knowledge of the business. An Executing Strategy LLC was registered with the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 2009 under the signatory James Bruce Harreld, but it was dissolved earlier this year.

Harreld, according to public records, on Feb. 6, 2013, filed three mandatory annual reports for the business for the years 2010, 2011, and 2012. But no reports have been filed since, and the secretary of the commonwealth on June 30 took action to dissolve the business, which listed its services provided as consulting, strategy, implementation, marketing, and turnaround advice.

Harreld’s LinkedIn profile currently lists him as a corporate adviser in the Greater Denver Area and working for General Motors from 2015 to present — although the CV provided by the Board of Regents doesn’t include work with General Motors."

Hey.....everything's political. Only makes sense.

If they made a choice everyone could agree on....what would the political blow hard arguers on HROT have to complain about? Something else I suppose, but still...........................

Yes. Those leftist snobs trying to pollute the minds of our youth.

I am going to love watching this.

If he truly did misrepresent, or flat out lie, about his past, is there any chance UI would let him go? Or is this done? Just wondering if there is anyone in the know about this.

Rastetter is an idiot for one and he shouldn't be on the board of Regents. Definitely an unconventional hire. The guy was basically self-employed before this and lied on his resume. Doesn't seem very qualified to run a University but who knows?. I have serious questions about the hire but hope that I am wrong. Also, how do you pay the guy that much when he is the least qualified?

I think it was pointed out before they announced so I think they knew about it and didn't care.

PRESS RELEASE: New University of Iowa Bruce Harreld announced that he has sold the art department to a consortium of Italian colleges. Meanwhile, the music department will continue to be part of the University of Iowa but will be relocated to China where labor costs are lower.

I always have to laugh when message board folks call wildly successful business people "idiots".

Maybe he has character flaws or is a jerk or is egotistical, but he is most assuredly not an "idiot". Obama is an idiot. That is a much better example........

Now you are just playing semantics. And being a successful business person does not exclude one from being an idiot not by my definition of idiot at least.

Oh god here we go

Also heard he will require the athletes to buy their own tape or stop taping their ankles. Another great hire by Terry Braindead!

The irony in this post, good lord.

It seems odd that the Regents are willing to take a $500,000 per year gamble on a self-employed guy with no academic administrative experience, a measly MBA, a moderately impressive record in the corporate world (some would say not very impressive at all), and a fraudulent resume--all the while admitting that he will have to learn "on the job" from others already employed by the University. What a deal (for him)! What a lousy deal for the faculty, the staff, and the students at the University of Iowa if he turns out to be a failure or--as many within the University fear--a "yes" man for the Regents' relentless efforts to reduce state financial support for the University of Iowa. The guy deserves a chance now that he's the top dog, and he might turn out to be great. He truly might. But there are enough red flags fluttering around to suggest that this risky hire could have more to do with taking the state's flagship university to the wood shed than to the "next level."
