I'm not meaning to blame the victims here. The driver is primarily at fault. The engineers/construction firm also has significant fault by not putting up bollards to protect the path from motor vehicles. I'm fully expecting bollards to be constructed in the next few weeks to prevent a similar incident.Would you rather have someone drive drunk across the bridge, or have someone walk on the sidewalk of the bridge with a buzz? What if they were out drinking in Bettendorf and walked home? I'd say they were being responsible. We saw what happened when someone decided to drive drunk...

My comment was more of an aside. To your point about drinkers, people in the QC don't generally walk across the Mississippi River to drink. When you say out drinking in Bettendorf and walked home, that tells me you're likely not a local since there isn't really anywhere to drink late at night close to the bridge, aside from the casino on the opposite side of the bridge from the pedestrian path and maybe one bar even further away I guess. I'd guess that the people were actually northbound going from downtown Moline, with several bars, to Bettendorf. I used to drive across the old bridge twice a day for 3.5 years when the bridge was closer to downtown Moline. For the new one that is further away from downtown, that would be a long ass hike while sober in daylight let alone while buzzed at 2 AM. That was the point of my comment.
They typically hold off on releasing the name until charges are determined and actually filed.Still won't release the name of the driver. Which is odd, why are they hiding the identity of the person?
I'm not sure they would have had anywhere to go other than the water below depending how close they were to the base. Once you get closer to the base, the space between the path and interstate/off-ramp closes.. but its still a somewhat of a higher barrier that wouldn't be simple to climb, especially if they didnt really see the car coming or didnt have time to reactthe victims failed to get out of the way.
All charges now filed and arrestee is named:They typically hold off on releasing the name until charges are determined and actually filed.

I road over it a few hours after incident on Sunday morning. Lots of people walking/jogging/biking on it.I was surprised to see the walk way was already open today.
What a vexing problem. It’s almost as if gates have not been invented.
LOL. I had a similar thought...my goodness, what a brain buster. đŸ˜€ How about a removable bollard, or two? What a vexing problem. It’s almost as if gates have not been invented.
This is why Quad Citians can’t have nice things.
