New red shirt rule

As a true freshman you are allowed to play in 4 games. And still get a redshirt.. my question is it only for freshman or any year??? Because I could see a massive abuse of this rule..

I don't think you can "abuse" this rule. All freshmen need to play in a couple games. It is a great opportunity to test ability, reward a hard worker, or motivate someone who needs it.

My guess is that with this rule in place, more guys will grad transfer. Easy to play 3.4 years for first school then move to a big school for more pt, or to win more games.

My understanding is that is applies to any year. Player has 5 to play 4, and in that extra year they can play a max of 4. Play more than 4, and that uses 1 year.

Not just true freshmen. Any player that hasn't yet used their redshirt year.

Student-athletes have five years to complete four seasons of competition, so the new rule will allow an athlete to use a redshirt, if it hasn't been previously used, in up to four games of competition during the season.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe this is replacing the medical redshirt because of how confusing it became?

If we’d had it in ‘15, Ott would have gotten his redshirt i believe.

If you lose 2 full years of competition to injury you can apply for a 6th year (ala Jess Settles, Robbie Hummel, etc.).

Ott appeared in 6 games in 2015, so no he wouldn't have gotten one under this rule either.

Why would a player red shirt now unless they were physically unable to compete or are at the school they 100% want to be at? Redshirting takes away a player’s ability to leave with out penalty.

Freshman get the opportunity to display their talents for 4 games not only for the current program but for other suitors. If they play well they can then evaluate the current programs depth chart and then apply to transfer at the end of the year if they do not like where they might sit.

It will give some of the true freshmen a taste of playing in a game in front of 70,000 people. They will love it. Sure beats wearing the uniform while watching 13 games from the sidelines.

Well there are always some true freshman that earn playing time so it doesn't change anything for them. The only way it would do anything for Iowa is if there are injuries and they are forced to play a freshman early in some games. Iowa doesn't have enough blow out games to just play a true freshman for the sake of getting him some playing time.

Blair.... do you believe this will cut down the number of requests for a 6th year of eligibility petitions?

Basically its the lineman, especially on the OL who will probably still redshirt that first year. It takes a true specimen like Wirfs to step in and be physically ready to compete at the BIG level as a frosh. As KF has stated, WR, RB, and DB's are most likely to be able to play some right away.

What are the transfer rules? Does a player still have to sit out a year after transferring?
Can a guy play in 4 games the yet they transfer?
