Why only football too?As a true freshman you are allowed to play in 4 games. And still get a redshirt.. my question is it only for freshman or any year??? Because I could see a massive abuse of this rule..
Not just true freshmen. Any player that hasn't yet used their redshirt year.As a true freshman you are allowed to play in 4 games. And still get a redshirt.. my question is it only for freshman or any year??? Because I could see a massive abuse of this rule..

If you lose 2 full years of competition to injury you can apply for a 6th year (ala Jess Settles, Robbie Hummel, etc.).My understanding is that is applies to any year. Player has 5 to play 4, and in that extra year they can play a max of 4. Play more than 4, and that uses 1 year.
Ott appeared in 6 games in 2015, so no he wouldn't have gotten one under this rule either.Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe this is replacing the medical redshirt because of how confusing it became?
If we’d had it in ‘15, Ott would have gotten his redshirt i believe.
This really won't do much for Iowa unless there are injuries.
It will give some of the true freshmen a taste of playing in a game in front of 70,000 people. They will love it. Sure beats wearing the uniform while watching 13 games from the sidelines.

Student-athletes have five years to complete four seasons of competition, so the new rule will allow an athlete to use a redshirt, if it hasn't been previously used, in up to four games of competition during the season.

Basically its the lineman, especially on the OL who will probably still redshirt that first year. It takes a true specimen like Wirfs to step in and be physically ready to compete at the BIG level as a frosh. As KF has stated, WR, RB, and DB's are most likely to be able to play some right away. Why would a player red shirt now unless they were physically unable to compete or are at the school they 100% want to be at? Redshirting takes away a player’s ability to leave with out penalty.
Freshman get the opportunity to display their talents for 4 games not only for the current program but for other suitors. If they play well they can then evaluate the current programs depth chart and then apply to transfer at the end of the year if they do not like where they might sit.
