Iowa got destroyed on the boards tonight and it showed having a 7'1" 6'10" 6'9" and 6'8" guy doesn't always help win or even wash the rebounding advantage. It looks like Fran the way he is recruiting may be going to a wing system that plays the angles. Putting 2 or 3 guys on the court with range that can crash the boards, shoot, pass and drive all from the wing. This style would have benefited Iowa more today as it would have placed better D on the outside while also spreading the Zags big men out. BYU ran this style in the games they played against the Zags this year and beat them using it. I like Iowa's future and the guys they are bringing in. Hopefully they can shoot and defend.

Gonzaga is a huge team. They were 2nd in defensive rebounding in the nation. Obviously you don't want to get beat on the boards but it was a very good rebounding team that did it.

I agree bUT Iowa's current system also allowed the Zags big to sit in the post. The system Fran is recruiting for would spread them out more and would give wings the ability to crash the boards.

I don't think we have the guard play to dribble inside, penetrate the lane, and score. We needed to get their bigs in foul trouble with better penetration. Woody and Gabe to a lesser extent left the lane too frequently and got pick and rolled. You can't be that out of position to get offensive rebounds. The whole team didn't seem to want to follow their shots in the first half.

The gameplan was lacking but we just got outplayed.

I think the game is changing. Fran might just be taking the best guys available (hard to blame him) but I'd love to see him adopt a 3 wing style.

I wish he would see what's happening in the NBA and bring it to the big ten. all about length defensively and space, 3's and layups offensively. The long 2 is becoming extinct.

If I'm a college coach I'd be looking closely at what the Rockets are doing. All the 3s are even more valuable with the shorter distance

This is what drives me nuts about Uthoff's shot selection. I don't mind him taking those free throw line pull up jumpers from time to time but he takes a ton of really long 2's that are only like 1 foot under the 3 pt line. You might as well just pull up from 3 if you're going to shoot from that distance.

Jok, Gesell, and Uthoff are all kings of the long 2pt shot. Gesell doesn't seem to have range to shoot 3s consistently. Whitey ended up being one of our better 3pt shooters.

I agree, college ball is about 3pt shooting. You need Bigs, but you want big with skills.

Agree. And this will start to manifest itself next year when we will certainly be a more perimeter-oriented team with more of the players you're talking about. You look at next year's team and the highest returning scorers (Uthoff/Jok) are essentially perimeter players who can drive from the wing. Add Uhl, Ellingson, Moss, Fleming, Hutton, Williams to that mix, all of whom are in that same mold. Jones, who many think is in the fold, would be added to that list. The only real post guy we have for sure next year is Woody (Wagner might be in that category if he puts on weight). We're going to be the type of team you're talking about next year if we have any success.

The one 7 footer didn't play and the others were OK but made to look like NBA Hall of Famers because Iowa showed no guts at all in playing any defense. If our guys didn't wet their pants on the national stage and actually played basketball, they could have won but they came to lose, NOT to compete and that was painfully obvious early. Fran needs tough guys, not these fold like origami guys we have now. Even just ONE player could turn around this culture of losing or playing like b@#$hes. I hope Fran can bring in a winner who can lead this team. Gatens has been the only leader Iowa has had under his tenure and he was gone too soon on an average Iowa team.

Even on their best night, dry pants, and guts all over the place there was no way Iowa beats Gonzaga. Too many mismatches.

Ya, excellent post??? Did you watch the same game I did? Sasquatch stood at the top of the key or FTL on almost
every defensive set in the 1st half? Perception is such a facinating thing......
P.S. - I was sober, could that be the difference?

Hey, Woody wants to talk to you behind CHA around 4pm. Make sure you show up, wouldn't want anyone to think you're gutless.
You should just not speak, unless it is to a counselor.

Agree....worked well against Davidson. Gonzaga was just a much better overall team and it doesn't hurt that they shot lights out. The shoot 45% from three point range the first 30 minutes of the game and it's a different story. There were, however, a number of times that specific players seemed to forget how to hedge. Gabe O., I love ya, but what's the use in hedging all the way to half court if you can't get back to the post to guard the entry pass. That's just being overly aggressive and not thinking about your role. On a side rant, I saw to many instance where guys didn't see the ball and their man. How the hell can you play man defense when you have your back turned to the ball...and that inlcudes AW.

When we tried to trap the on ball screens last night, we got absolutely destroyed. We tried to trap hard out midway through the 1st half, and Gonzaga passed the ball out of it and hurt us bad. To be honest, the way Gonzaga was shooting the ball there is very little that was going to stop them in that 1st half. Granted we didn't play great defense, but sometimes a team gets hot (see Iowa vs. Davidson)

That was because of the defense Fran would Not get out of. It was a sort of match up zone/man defense. Guys would switch, then lose their player. Nobody, that is nobody seemed to know who TF to block out. Thus Gonzaga had free rain to rebound at will. Sadly, stubbornly, Fran did not alter his game plan until we were toast.... Even after the Zags shooting chilled their shooting, they still had open shots and could take whatever rebound they seemed to want...

There is a pretty good chance we move to a 30 second shot clock next year. I wonder if Fran is anticipating this with the type of players he is bringing in?
