NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - New York mayor Bill de Blasio is trying to put a positive spin on a recent rash of stabbings and slashings across the city. He credits the NYPD taking guns off of the street.

"I'm not a criminologist but I can safely say that guns are being taken off the street in an unprecedented way. Some people, unfortunately, are turning to a different weapon," de Blasio says.

New Yorkers have been on edge because of a series of highly-reported attacks, including several seemingly random attacks on the subways. The city was averaging more than 10 stabbing attacks a day in the first six weeks of the year.

The mayor claims that since there are so many fewer guns on the street, officers can now focus on criminals using knives and razors.

He says catching people committing minor infractions, so-called "broken windows" policing, is the key to getting weapons off of the streets.

So.... officers can't focus on knives and razors unless guns are removed? o_O

In New York City you are also safe from being bashed in the head with a 32.oz soda cup.

May not bode well for the people clamoring to take guns away. Obviously the crazies will turn to other weapons if they don't have guns like the 2nd amendment backers have claimed.

I'd be interested in the fatality rate of these stabbings as opposed to NYC's past metrics for shootings. Are these stabbings more survivable? Or are they still ending up at the same spot in the end? Also, what is the arrest rate for these attacks? Knives are obviously quieter, so it could be easier for people to get away with knife attacks against unsuspecting victims.

I'm not anti-gun, but remember that it's harder for a knife wielding assailant to commit mass-murder.

Just sayin' ...

Maybe for an ordinary Joe, but someone trained in the art of knife-fighting can bring a bunch of people down really quick.
