Next thing for Garza

When I saw the title I figured it was going to be selling ice cream at halftime. I'm pretty happy with his game being the best player in the country and all :).

Yes, this wasn't a complaint.

Hes already maxed out his game more than anyone I can remember, hence the amazing efficiency numbers.

Theres really only one untapped area of potential left offensively.

Even the most dominant big men like Shaq and Wilt eventually figured out its just quicker and easier to beat a double with passing.

Its not that they couldn't score against it allot of times but it serves a bigger purpose in the long run to get your shooters easy shots and put more doubt in the defense.

I'm sure he can improve in it. With that said he does have a positive assist to turnover ratio and he's shooting almost 70% this year so maybe passing to a lesser scorer isn't usually the best option even with a double team.😊.

20 Realistic things? Not related to defense?

Theres allot of things on defense but that stuffs not going to happen with Fran.

Yes, we all saw the efficiency graphic in the Purdue game. We all think he's great. Historic even.

Passing and cutting is the one area that is preventing this team from being great on offense with what they have. Thats my opinion like it or not.

I know what good ball movement looks like and Iowa often doesn't have it.

It looks like Gonzaga.
I think you're reaching a bit, but to each his own.

Im not suggesting that he shouldn't still attack doubles too because that works allot of the time, especially if he's deep in the paint.

It's not really about assists to TO its about attacking a defense where they are most vulnerable and making them doubt their strategy.

Getting your good shooters quality looks also has allot of value in my opinion. Even if you could just as easily score.

It keeps the rest of the team engaged and at some point you're going to need them to make tougher 3s so seeing the ball go in on easy shots helps.

I think its more of a reach to argue that you shouldn't be looking to attack an opponent by passing when they are sending 3 guys at you.

Garza is good enough where he often doesn't have to but its normally the way you do it.

Luka’s been a lot better at kicking the ball out when the double team comes without turning it over, but I agree with RocknRoll that he could be quite a bit better at looking to find somebody in a position to score versus just finding somebody to pass to. It’s nitpicking Garza’s game - the guy is the best Hawkeye I’ve ever had the opportunity to watch (by far), but it would really help ball movement if he were more capable of completing a skip pass or finding a cutter, and his assist numbers would skyrocket because there are guys wide open when he gets doubled/tripled

I can't believe that some of the amateur coaches on here are criticizing the acknowledged best player in America. No one's game is perfect but Luka's is the best there is. No one has given this program more than Luka Garza. Thank God we have a coach who knows how to design ways to get him the ball.

To my knowledge, no true Hawk fan is unappreciative of how great Garza is. I can say that I think that LeBron James is the greatest basketball player of all time while also acknowledging that he needs to become a better free throw shooter. Nobody here is being disrespectful, simply discussing Luka’s game. If you disagree with comments being made, feel free to weigh in instead of the “amateur coaches” crap. Obviously nobody here is an expert, but we all have opinions

Grow up.

Theres nothing inappropriate or disrespectful with this discussion.

You're response is whats inappropriate.

The double was extremely effective for Minnesota tonight.

Time to start learning to pass. It needs to happen way faster than has been the case up until now.

Is to pass better.

For this team to really be special offensively Luka has to start understanding how to take advantage of double/triple teams instead of trying to score against them.

Trying to score on a triple team is silly when you have that many shooters on your team.

So when you are triple teamed...how are you supposed to pass it...

That's like saying Mila Kunis needs to trim her toe nails better.

The games following this post have proven my position.

Luka has specifically said in post game that he is looking to pass more and better against 2 and 3 defenders.

And he has passed the ball better, and more frequently, especially in the NW game.

There was not a need to pass today, mostly because we couldn't get him the ball in decent position most of the time.

But when he did get it Rutgers was not aggressively doubling.

I've obviously never seen a defense so focused to stop one player. There's frequently a third guy blocking passing lanes.

The boys need to work on a back side game, I assume the coaches are working on that improvement.

For all the complaining about Iowa's offense today by us Iowa fans, there is a reality that Rutgers is a good defensive team. The only teams to be more efficient against that Rutgers D were Illinois and Ohio State, playing at OSU and at Illinois. There are no fans, but Rutgers is allowed to play more physical on defense at home than they are on the road.

Garza was fantastic, simply great again today. He scored 25 points on 11 shots. Didn't force stuff despite Rutgers making it hard for him to get the ball. Got just enough from the other guys. Huge game coming up at Maryland. Getting 2 road wins in order would be massive.

Luka was fantastic today even by his standards.

Hes starting to figure out how to deal with the doubles a little more every game.

Teams have the baseline spin scouted now though, so thats going to get him into trouble if not used a little more sparingly.

First read should be to pass unless hes touching the restricted line.

Im impressed with Luka's improvement in this area in just a month. Shows me how smart he is.

Hes figured out how the opponents were attacking him and hes now effectively countering it.

Hes hitting the skip pass with consistency and the shooters are wide open.

Its not a coincidence that Iowas offense is looking more fluid since the Minnesota loss and its a result of Luka looking to pass.

And hes getting better shots as a result.
