I was just listening to ESPN's pregame coverage of today's NFL Conference Championship games while doing some things around the house. After about an hour of them talking about Brady and Rodgers, my ears perked up when I heard Teddy Bruschi mention Tampa Bay's rookie tackle Tristan Wirfs. I turned to see a video of Tristan tackling and pinning his opponent in the Iowa HS Wrestling championships from his senior. year. Bruschi went on and on about how great Wirfs has been, reviewed several highlights of Tristan shutting down the Saints' great pass rushers last week, and said that his ability to protect Brady had been a key to Tampa's success this year and would be big today v GB.
I must say that it's fairly rare to have an offensive lineman be featured in one of these pregame shows, much less a rookie one. Great PR for Wirfs and the Iowa program. Tristan is becoming an NFL star and is very deserving of such accolades. Great player, great kid, great Hawkeye
