Nixon not eligible?

He is taking an academic redshirt to make sure he basically gets his feet under him for the long haul. Not having the grades in HS and then going to a juco for a semester I think this is a great move to ensure he will be here for the future. Kirk says he is doing well in the classroom since enrolling.

Are academic redshirts an option or a requirement? I guess what I'm asking is if Iowa had wanted him to play this fall could he have been eligible to do so ... or is their hand forced to redshirt him because he would be ineligible otherwise?

I agree. It would be nice to have him next year but our d-line should be solid and getting RS might make him our version of Suh in 19.

Having him for the future is well and good but he would've made a big difference this year. With the green lbs and smallish DL, it's gonna be tough slowing opponents on the ground. Call me somewhat disappointed.

plus if he turns out to be a stud, he probably won't be around the entire time anyways......

Smallish DL?

Anthony Nelson: 6'7", 271 lbs
Cedrick Lattimore: 6'3", 295 lbs
Matt Nelson: 6'8", 295 lbs
AJ Epenesa: 6'5, 277 lbs

Jesus H ... you know what.. I was super excited to see this kid maul some QB’s and RB’s in 2018.. but his grades are apparently the issue? I know that the U OF I and many if not all major even minor colleges offer excellent and free tutoring.. I just hope he takes advantage of all opportunities is all as he has a wealth of talent and by getting his degree which is much more important IMHO...I hope nothing but the best for him .. keep plugging away and working hard and things will come to him

The Gazette said he was ruled academically ineligible

"High school students still need to have at least a 2.0 GPA and complete 16 core classes to participate in Division I sports, but now, they'll need to have a 2.3 GPA and 10 of their core courses locked in by the start of their senior year to play in their first year without redshirting."

I'm betting Nixon passed the first (2.0, 16 core), but not the other (2.3, 10 core by end of junior HS year).

I recall articles saying it was his senior year of schoolwork that got him eligible for D1. But this wasn't cleared by the NCAA in time to be admitted to Iowa in the fall.

So, that late clearance (in which he wasn't accepted by the NCAA) is why he is now not playing THIS fall. If he had been cleared in time, he could have went to Iowa instead of IW and completed his AR year by the time 2018 season occurs - assuming his grades were good enough during the 2017-18 school year at Iowa.

So after he takes his academic red shirt, will he have two years left of playing eligibility?
