JBo sure catches a lot of flak on this board. He is now the leading 3-point shooter and leading assist man in the history of Iowa Basketball. Seems as though that ought to be worth a slew of "way to go's," from the fanbase on here. I admit when JBo signed, I was one of those less than ecstatic, but from the time he worked himself into the starting line up in that ACC/B1G Challenge game against ND, he has been a wonderful asset to the program.

Numbskulls have been saying Jordan-an ESPN 4* point guard at the time of his recruitment, was not a point guard and they've dug their heels in ever since. At the time I asked when was the last time Iowa signed an ESPN four star top 120 player as a disappointing fall back?

Now, five years later, he leaves the school as our career leader in threes, assists and, cannot find a confirming link but comparing numbers, probably the most accurate career free throw shooter. Also, next to Ronnie Lester and BJ, he's the winningest point guard in the last 50 years.

The point guard's first objective is to get the ball to other players in scoring position. Jordan has done that more than any other player in Iowa history-and that's playing much of his career with another point guard like player on the floor at the same time.

In fairness, ESPN hands out 4 stars like a candy man at a fat camp.

Their ratings should never be used as the basis for anything.

Really? There are only about 120 4 and 5 star players, and that number is pretty constant year to year. ESPN has the largest group of scouts and contributors and the most consistent metrics year to year. Plus, it allows Iowa fans to be certain that we aren't being sold a bill of goods because ESPN does not like Iowa recruits.

Having said that, I've always looked for service that is more reliable or at least more inclusive. ESPN has some big blind spots where players get locked in and never move, like CJ who stayed a 3 after a senior season that should have seen him moving way up the list. Rivals seems even more influenced by who is recruiting a player. I've heard, but have not seen evidence personally, that 247's rankings are heavily influenced by HS coaches and AAU coaches. 247 does produce some strange evaluations. They have Joey Labas as a 4* QB and everyone else has him as a 3*.

So if you think there's a more realistic or accurate service let me know who it is and why you think so. I have no great love for ESPN.

ESPN had Joe Toussaint as a 4 star despite being their #40 pg.

I can't imagine they only have about 100 total 4-5 stars when they had 40 point guards at that level alone.

*I just looked back at the Toussaint class. 215 4-5 stars and >40 at each position. Like I said, candy.

Not sure what you mean by the Labas comment. He hasn't played a down yet and very well could be 4 star talent. I'd take 247 and Rivals all day over ESPN.

And pertaining to the Labas comment, recall that 247 bumped Mason Richman and Yahya Black up to 4 stars while everyone largely had them as 3 stars. Both guys made the 2 deeps this season for some games as true freshmen.

ESPN's player position number and their 4/5* numbers don't correlate, its one of the things I don't like about ESPN. Its like two entirely different lists and it takes a while to learn that is exactly what it is, prepared by different staff. Plus their politics-see Dakich thread. If you go position by position and look at the cut mark for a 4* and then compare number 100's grade you can calculate the number of 4* out of the top 100. There are about 20 on average every season. Sometimes a few more, like Jordan's sr year of HS there were 122 and Jordan finished in a tie at 118, with another tie down at 122 or so. Then came the top 3*s.

Good point about 247. I subscribe to ESPN, Rivals and 247. Might have just stuck with ESPN because I've been there so long I know their system. I've been linking to Rivals off Hawkeye Report more this year than any other for football recruiting and just started 247 less than a year ago. When I have some free time I will give 247 another look. Off course I link to recruiting right off any hyperlink on Hawkeye Report but maybe I'll give their larger recruiting picture some more attention.

The Joey Labas thing is what actually got my attention for 247. Joey starting by the end of next season is my bold unlikely prediction for the 21 football season. Watched more of his video and he does appear to make all the throws. Seems to recognize a QB running lane and immediately tucks and runs when those lanes appear. Then I learned that he's been in one on one training with Ricky Stanzi. You know Joey is learning, at the least the progressions the coaches want, etc... if not learning the entire Iowa offense. I do think our football staff recruits good QBs, the last three are still on NFL paychecks-at least for now. Every year somewhere an out of no where freshman QB emerges as a kind of star, why not this year at Iowa?

Edit: sorry to get so far off topic. I'm multi tasking to the sound of my bulldog barking at some unseen menace in the front yard (damned wabbits) so mind was wandering around.

I don’t live in Iowa and I was telling a bunch of college basketball junkie friends about the treatment Jbo was getting on this board, and they couldn’t believe it. They all thought Jbo should have found a permanent spot in every Hawkeyes heart after that Christ Street’s intentional free-throw miss!

I like JBo but I can see why his antics rub people the wrong way.

He takes the position of being the college athlete "victim" for not getting paid and he routinely lectures the fan base about how lucky they are to have guys like him.

Went over to 247. Their stars list has Joey Labas as a 4*. Their position list has Joey Labas as the no. 48 (I think) QB and a 3*. So the dissonance is not unique to ESPN it seems.

JBo can piss ice water, watching Iowa over many years - we usually have pretty good players in any given year but normally when we get to the Show (it's been awhile mind you) our boyz play like nervous nellies when the pressure starts to amp up. Looking forward to Garzilla, Weezy, and JBo willing this team deep into the tourney...

You're conflating their own rankings with their composite ranking.

The 247 composite ranking is the average of 247, Rivals and ESPN.

Labas is a 90 4 star on 247's own ranking and an 86 3 star on their composite.

Now go back to the position rankings. Where you see him ranked 42nd at QB. Look at the smaller number right below 42 (26). 26 is where 247 ranks him. 42 is where he's ranked with the composite score using all 3 services.

What you describe as dissonance is actually a feature. They produce their own rankings but they also create a composite score to show the average of all 3 services.

Thanks. I'm high on Labas and hope 247 has this one right.

Do you suppose Rev Kev has a blog somewhere pointing out Iowa's need for a PG? Bohannon not only set the Iowa 3 point record, but he's closing in on the all time B1G mark (all the while dealing with plantar faciitis and 2 bad hips).

Shortly after Iowa signed Bohannon, I bumped into a player in a Marion shirt. I asked him what he thought of the signing, and he said JoBo was his best friend (and teammate). He said Iowa fans were going to be surprised how good Jordan was. Yes Sir..............

The thing that impressed me most about jbo is his ability to lock down trice for the last 6-7 minutes of the game or whenever he came back in for Joe T. He was running all over the court denying him and THAT was probably my favorite thing to see the whole game...well maybe besides weezys clutch block....and Elvis being back
