No Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky or Kansas in the Final Four

"This will be the first time since 1985 that we’ll have a Final Four without at least one of these traditional hoops blue bloods — Duke, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, North Carolina or UCLA."

WRONG! Since Louisville vacated their 2013 appearance, the said streak has only been going on since 2014. Maybe some of you would say, "Yeah, but the games were played so....," which is fine for laymen, but this is supposed to be a well-informed sportswriter representing ESPN - he should know better than to give Louisville credit for being in the '13 Final Four.

The game will be tape delayed, they will run highlights of Zion in the live slot and a junior high game he played in .

this year is only third time since 1987 without one of the OP’s four teams. 28 out of 31 years. I don’t think IU, Louisville, and UCLA really compare to these four during that time span. Glad not to have all seven, but especially these four!

2018 KU
2017 UNC
2016 UNC
2015 Duke, UK
2014 UK
2013 none of them, but did have Patino (ex UK)
2012 UK, KU
2011 UK
2010 Duke
2009 UNC
2008 KU, UNC
2007 & 2006 none of them
2005 UNC
2004 Duke
2003 KU
2002 KU
2001 Duke
2000 UNC
1999 Duke
1998 UK, UNC
1997 UK, UNC
1996 UK
1995 UNC
1994 Duke
1993 UNC, UK, KU
1992 Duke
1991 Duke, KU, UNC
1990 Duke
1989 Duke
1988 KU, Duke
1987 none of them

And actually if you wanna go a step further and add a couple other multi-title winning teams like UConn and Villanova (more recent dynasties), then the Final Four hasn't seen this much parity since 1979, when MSU won their first title.

And really MSU is the blue blood in this group, having been to 10 Final Fours and having won 2 titles. Auburn and Texas Tech are making their first appearances and Virginia is still searching for their first title game appearance, having only been to the Final Four twice before.

Also, a little about that 1979 Final Four, your contestants were:

MSU (led by Magic Johnson) over Pennsylvania, 101-67

and

Indiana State (led by Larry Bird) over DePaul, 76-74

And of course, MSU won the title game that brought the NCAA tournament into the spotlight, 75-64 over the Sycamores.

DePaul won the 3rd place game.

1979 had a 3rd place game. Cool.

Wonder if there would be much interest in doing that again. Or if teams are ready to call it a season after losing in the final 4
Yeah unfortunately, I don't think the interest is there to play a consolation game.

Heck, they use to do regional consolation games, which in all honesty was the best way for teams to "get their money's worth" if they were gonna be making these long trips. Might as well get two or three games out of it as opposed to just one trip and done.

I'll be curious to see what the ratings are (not griping about the participants, just seriously curious). Sparty and the Cavs should bring folks in, but the Pearl Necklaces and Rump Raiders could dampen things.
