I believe this Hawkeye team is really good and has a chance to advance in the tournament in March that is much better than most years under Fran. I think the talent and athleticism is better all around but and imo this is huge. They need to be healthy and rested. My feelings are this won’t be the case if Fran continues to only play 7 players and have the starters all averaging around 35 minutes.
Even pros wear down over time. I get the argument that shorter rotations work better and in crunch time , imo you have to play it that way or you’ll be out of the tournament before anyone has broken a sweat. To me it seems Fran is pushing the shorter rotation too early this season (so far ), unless he isn’t seeing much value in the bench this year. If that’s truly the case , next season expect a big drop off. Good talented class coming but who will he trust if they don’t have any experience in key moments. I’m a big supporter of Fran and his staff . I often feel he gets more from some players than I felt had the talent to play so well, (Luka Garza, Aaron White, Devin Marble, as examples) . However I’ve also wondered why he doesn’t use the strengths of the bench players he has for more than 2 minutes at a time. Sure it might cost a game now and then. ( Perkins in Minnesota a couple years ago, if I’m remembering correctly but sometimes you learn more from adversity rather than a small success. In the long run those days may pay big dividends down the road. I will be very curious how this season plays out, who steps up when given the opportunity. Who gets that opportunity and do they take advantage when they do always fascinates me. Can the player seize that moment and run with it. Going to be fun to see how it plays out. Long message to basically say I wonder what the outcome would have been against Wisconsin if Fran had played his bench a lot more in the second half of the Cyclone game. Yes he’d have been crucified if the bench had lost the Iowa State game but so much could have been gained imo if the bench had gotten some experience and starters would have had a bit more rest for Whisky. Oh well water under the bridge, Elvis has left the building . Reminding myself to look forward not backwards!
