If this was mentioned here at the time, I missed it. I ran across the reference in Sarah Chayes excellent "On Corruption in America."

The short version is that if you count all the eligible voters who didn't vote in 2016 as having voted for "Nobody" then Nobody won in a landslide.

In the Electoral College...

Trump would have received 21 electoral votes
Hillary would have received 72 electoral votes
Nobody would have received 445 electoral votes

In the map, states and counties won by Nobody are in black.

Imagine we had a mandatory voting requirement like Australia has. No penalty, but all missed votes would be tallied as "None of the Above."

Combine that with actually having "None of the Above" as a voting option on the ballot.

I wonder what impact that would have on elections?

Would it, for example, force the parties to put up better candidates, or promote better policies?

Some of those states are pretty amazing, viewed this way.

We think of NY as being reliably blue and WVa as being reliably red. But here they are both all black except for a single red district.

Pretty embarrassing for a "democracy."

Atlanta is pretty much all red and black.
