Non caged, live animals in houses

We just got two cats, our first live animals living with us not in a cage or aquarium. It's ****ing disgusting. Hair, dander, shit & piss accidents. Why do people do this? (If it's not obvious, I was not in favor of this but everyone else in the family overruled me)
Get cats? No idea. Should have gotten puppies you could train. I recommend miniature golden doodles. They don’t shed and are 20 - 30 pounds. If you want a bigger dog, Regular golden doodles as they shed a lot less than a retriever.

I’m with you…I don’t allow any pets in our house. Growing up we had a dog and cats, but they lived outside. I do like dogs better than cats, but the thing about dogs is it would be like having a perpetual 2 year old and I’m not picking up their poop the rest of my life. 🥴 At least with a cat they have a litter box and that would be somewhat easier to deal with. Lastly, my wife and I like to travel / go places sometimes at the last minute, so getting someone to watch your pet(s) when you’re gone seems like a pain.

Idk how old the kittens are but cats love having one spot to piss and shit. They will figure it out on their own (as long as you leave the litter box in one spot). The most you might have to do is physically put the kitten in the litter box and force its front paw to scratch at the litter. That's it. Much MUCH easier than training a puppy.

One of our cats was exactly like this. The other shits and pisses seemingly anywhere in the house. Maybe it has to do with one marking its territory first, I don't know.. it's just gross.

Our labradoodle came fully potty trained. He also learned to do tricks easily and won a few blue ribbons and trophies in 4H.

We have two cats and two dogs. Wouldn’t trade them for a million bucks. In my 30 years of marriage I haven’t had a cat use anything except the litter box a single time.

Had a golden retriever. Best friend I ever had, although she learned to leave my side when the Hawkeyes came on. Shed like crazy.

I like golden doodles and our next door neighbor has one, but there’s been a bit of blowback on the popularity of these since the combination of personality traits hasn’t always resulted in a fabulous pet.
I personally have a rescue schnoodle (miniature poodle/schnauzer) and as wonderful a pet as you can imagine but he does growl at the vet, who just laughs and says “ah - that’s the schnauzer side”.
Good luck with the cats. 🫤

Labradoodles tend to be a bit different than golden doodles in personality traits. They’re great dogs. (Note to say Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are my favorite breeds in the whole world)

Two dogs and two cats and it is awesome. The love shared far outweighs the occasional mess to clean. The dogs even sleep in our bed while the cats serve as alarm clocks and kill every insect, arachnid and rodent that dares enter the house while we sleep.

For me the shedding is the critical factor. I don’t want dogs that shed either. I love them at other people’s houses, just not mine.

We have two. One could be nominated for sainthood. The other is owley but loving in her own way, and amusing. With that being said, if we had the owley dog first I’m not sure I’d be as enthusiastic with the breed.

If you live in a neighborhood where it's feasible, consider making your cat an indoor-outdoor pet. Ideally with a pet door. Otherwise just let them in and out.

As a kid, my family always had a cat or 2 and they were indoor-outdoor cats which would ask to go out. No litter boxes needed.

The tradeoff is needing to apply flea meds now and then.

We have three cats and a dog in our home. You need at least one litter box per cat and they need to be scooped out daily. DAILY!

If you don’t, then the cats will make do as they see fit and you’ll have no one to blame but yourself. Cats can be quite fussy about the relative level of cleanliness of their litter boxes. Buy the lowest cost clumping litter you can find, don’t use clay litter that you can’t scoop and have to toss away weekly. Clumping litter is more economical as you go through a lot less of it and the daily clean out keeps the litter box smell down immensely.

Thats what we have. Far easier to clean than that cat was.

Prepare for one of those cats to become your BFF. For some reason they always love the dad that didn’t want them.

I wasn't allowed to have pets as a kid. Dad was the oldest of 5 farmkids and had to do all the chores. I understand that. But pets can be therapy for human mind. Even if it is only 10 minutes. The love they will give you if you treat them well is just amazing.

First pet I had was a cat. He watched every chiefs and Hawkeyes game with me. Even handled me when I yelled at the TV. Probably because he knew I'd give him beefsticks while watching. It was hard watching him die. Had a stroke that paralyzed his back legs. Took him ISU Vet hospital where he was struggling to breath. The staff was very caring. So if any of central Iowa folks need your pets taken care of......I recommend them
