Have done Purdue (2013 + 2014) Wisconsin (2015) Penn State (2016)
Heading to Evanston for NW in October. Would like a review of Ryan Field and what to expect when I head up there later this year. Thanks and Go Hawks!

Iowa fans will dominate the tailgate scene...like 10 to 1. I was amazed rolling into town and it was almost all Hawkeye fans.

The stadium is a dump (or was in '10). We took a shuttle to the stadium...what a mess. I think walking might have been faster.

Not sure if they still do it, but Goose Island used to do a tailgate where you could get a couple free FI beers if you're so inclined.

Traffic getting out of town will suck royally.

Ryan Field is just awful. The bathroom lines are brutal, the concessions are awful and the stadium is like a larger high school stadium. The tailgating can be fun. Unless they have done major renovations NW stadium is at or near the bottom of the pack of stadiums in the B1G.

I too am going. From what I've read, the main tailgating lots are on campus over a mile away. Is that accurate?

Also do anyone know where the team will sing the fight song if they win? Like what part of the stadium? Someone who was there in 2015 would know.

Total shithole. Comparing to Kingston is pretty close if you added a deck on one side.

If I have my directions oriented correctly, the northwest corner. (the side with the press box and the the end that leads to the NU athletic facilities.

Was there in 2015. Fun trip. I went to the tailgate party put on by Bravo Sports (I think that is what it was called) ... pretty decent. We drove in and parked pretty close. Chicago was fun (went to Willis Tower and pizza joint right across from it). Hope we can win that game. Go Hawks!

Don't listen to these guys I've been going up there since I was 7 years old:

- Tailgating and atmosphere/location is great. What's not to like about Evanston near the lake? It's in a neighborhood and it's very collegiate and cool. Intimate and one of my favorite places to see a game.

-Stadium: just a classic old old Big Ten stadium. People say it's a dump I say it's cool. You can smell the history. Not any like this still around - as old as MSU stadium and Memorial stadium in Champaign.

The stadium is a dump. Don't let the west side facade fool you and the bathrooms are horrific. It's still a place to watch a game.

Save the $$ and watch it online. I went in 2010 and it was horrible. PU & IU were better than NW. Doesn't seem like a college football stadium at all and the area around the stadium is nice, but your walking through neighborhoods (that are not tailgating) and flat out looked pissed that your walking through their neighborhood.

Storm - nothing against you personally but two days after knee surgery last week I walked 3.5 miles just to get out of the house and have been walking every day. Surgeon told me I could start moving around this coming Thursday. "Over a mile away", seriously.

Coming in from Colorado to the QC and driving up with friends. If I've offended you I'll make it up and buy you a beer.

I'm probably the only Iowa fan in the country who likes Ryan Field. Old school as it gets. I just like the place.

Also............and be sure you do this: There's a hot dog stand on the corner of the parking lot called Mustard's Last Stand. You see them on the Big Ten Network quite often. I love this place!!!! Great hot dogs. A must do.

You are about to go back in time. Ryan Field is a gem.

I was just asking

I like it. It is a POS but a nice old school feel. It is similar to going to an IVY league or D3 game. The polar opposite of the rest of the Big 10 stadiums. Plus, it is basically a home game for Iowa and do have Chicago for the weekend. Kind of an acquired taste. The first time you go it is like WTF, but then take it for what it is worth and is a good time.

Is there a certain lot to get into for tailgating? Just follow all the cars from Iowa heading to the game? Also making the trip for the first time.

Bump for us first timers now that we can start planning our trip.

When will game time be announced?

Went in 2015 but didn't tailgate, just came up from Lincoln Park on the Red/Purple line. Ryan Field leaves a lot to be desired but the area around the stadium in Evanston is pretty unique.

Looking to tailgate this year and am looking for suggestions...the lot passes on Stubhub are $150+ - has anyone parked in any of the golf lots around the stadium?

Easily the worst college stadium I've been to.
I've gone several different years for the relatively easy drive to get there and all of the many things to do in chicago. Now, I go to chicago for the many other things and have no plans to see that dumpy stadium in person again.

I was last there in '07. It is a dump, old and antiquated. My son was upset that 'Chicago's Big Ten School' did not sell pizza inside the stadium. I'm in no hurry to return.

This will be my sixth visit. Small stadium so all seats are relatively close to the field. Usually not a sellout so there's room to move around if you want. Tickets are (relatively) cheap. Beautiful campus. Chicago. Wouldn't miss it!

I went in 2010. The game sucked. The stadium was old and a bit dilapidated but it was also intimate. Also, Iowa fans absolutely owned the whole town.

Other than the outcome of the game, we enjoyed it.

One other thing...not sure if they still do it, but goose island had a free beer tailgate (you could get two free beers) right by the stadium.

I have some and memories of game outcomes in that place. I still remember Greenway celebrating too early...

Not sure if this was mentioned yet but with an 11am kickoff, a potential on fire wrigleyville awaits a Hawkeye after party. Game 6 of the NLCS is scheduled that day. If it happens I hope Chicago has enough beer for all.

Speaking of Northwestern. Iowa needs to stop turning the ball over to win this game. Northwestern has a pretty good defense but their offense has been suspect this year. If you don't allow them to have easy points off of turnovers then Iowa can win.

You mean NLCS, there isn’t a game 6 in division series.
