Raising the debt limit has nothing to do with the budget. The country ran up its credit card bill. Congress needs to raise the limit to pay the debt owed. Our country will suffer from a lower credit rating meaning and increase in our federal deficit.

Republicans don't believe in paying the bills.

Only tax cuts for the rich.

As Howard Dean used to point out "You can't trust Republicans with your money."

Seems like we would all know that by now.

You obviously don't know what you are talking about then. Edit: What you are suggesting would not be favorable to the US economy. How do you not understand this?

If Republicans want to have an honest discussion about spending they need to include defense spending. Some of the deficit hawks have committed to “looking at” defense spending. Other Republicans have said they intend to cut spending, including entitlement spending, with an eye on raising defense spending.

Simply put, there is no single approach that will work. Taxes have to go up, they are at historically low rates. Spending has to go down in areas that hurt politically.

The time to make those decisions is during the budget process. Not during the debt ceiling process.

If Republicans want to have an honest discussion about the budget, they need to focus on paying the bills. Sure, they can claim to be the party that wants to cut spending if they want - although no sensible person should think they really care - but if they can't save enough by spending cuts to pay the bills, then they need to raise revenues to pay the bills.

You know what would really slow inflation? If people believed the Federal Government would balance the budget once in a while.

Sure, all sensible folks will allow for deficit spending occasionally - as during genuine emergencies. But if we are always having emergencies, we have a problem. Because we shouldn't always have emergencies if we have competent governance.
