— A Republican election official in Wisconsin this month touted a drop-off in voter turnout in Milwaukee, arguing that GOP efforts dissuaded Black and Hispanic voters from casting ballots.
“We can be especially proud of the City of Milwaukee (80.2% Dem Vote) casting 37,000 less votes than cast in the 2018 election with the major reduction happening in the overwhelming Black and Hispanic areas,” Robert F. Spindell Jr., a state elections commissioner, told supporters in a Jan. 2 email.
Republican messages about the flaws of Democratic candidates contributed to “this great and important decrease in Democrat votes in the City,” he added.
Urban Milwaukee this week first reported on Spindell’s email. Soon after, Democrats called for the resignation of Spindell, who has been on the Wisconsin Elections Commission since 2019.
Under state law, the commission oversees Wisconsin elections and consists of three Democrats and three Republicans. Spindell has long been active in Republican politics and in 2020 joined with nine other Republicans to sign paperwork purporting to be the state’s presidential electors after President Donald Trump narrowly lost the state.
