Family members of former Nevada attorney general Adam Laxalt don’t want him to become the state’s new senator.
In a letter obtained by the Nevada Independent, 14 of Laxalt’s relatives endorsed his opponent, incumbent Senate Democrat Catherine Cortez Masto, in the tight race. While Laxalt’s relatives don’t mention him by name in the endorsement, they praise Cortez Masto’s record in the Senate and say they believe she “possesses a set of qualities that clearly speak of what we like to call ‘Nevada grit.’”
This isn’t the first time members of Laxalt’s family have turned out against him. Laxalt, the grandson of former Nevada governor and U.S. senator Paul Laxalt, drew rebukes from his family when he ran for governor in 2018 and claimed that he had been raised in the state. In an op-ed at the time, Laxalt’s family pointed out that, while he was born in Reno, he left Nevada as an infant, was raised on the East Coast and moved back to Nevada only in 2013 — a year before launching his political career. They also questioned his qualifications to lead the state.
In their new letter, Laxalt’s family members do not mention him but note that Cortez Masto “grew up understanding the daily realities of dogged hard work.” Cortez Masto, they point out, went to public school in Las Vegas, attended the University of Nevada at Reno and served as the state’s attorney general.
“She has always put Nevada first — even when it meant working against her own party’s policies,” they write.
In a statement, a Cortez Masto spokesperson welcomed the endorsement.
“The Laxalt family joins a growing list of Cortez Masto endorsers that includes Democrats, Republican leaders from across the state, and Nevada law enforcement, and she appreciates their support in the race,” Sigalle Reshef said.
Reshef was referring to the endorsements Cortez Masto received last week from the Nevada Police Union, the Nevada Association of Public Safety Officers and Nevada Law Enforcement Coalition.
