It is great to be an Iowa Wrestling fan.

Go Hawks!

Great article Todd...can't wait to be back in Carver this year! Assuming Kennedy is at '74 again this year, it will be interesting to see how he fairs at Midlands, and then I assume he gives Kemerer a few breaks throughout the season as well.

This. And is there a reason Kem would need multiple breaks during the season? Guessing it would be Myles Wilson, if one is needed.

Is Wilson still able to make 174? To these eyes, he sure looked like a full-sized 86kg at U23's.

Ok, yeah, I was thinking Kennedy would still have a shot to be a 4-timer but Todd referring to him as a RS Freshman threw me for a loop. Gives him another year to not worry too much about cutting weight and then see if 165 is possible for 2023.

Nelson will be the backup for Kemdawg this season most likely, then next season it should be 165 Kennedy, 174 Brands, 184 Assad. Wilson is a big 184 at this point so I’m not sure where he fits but I imagine he will wrestle off for the 184 spot

Iowa has a tough schedule this year. I do hope to see the starters take a few matches off.
25- bet we see cashman half the year. For Lee being healthy in March is all that matters. No hodge this year.
33- unfortunately for Desanto we won’t have a backup here. They will all be in RS. Cashman may bump up when he’s not filling in for Lee.
41- Drew Bennett
49- Turk
57- Kelly/Turk
65- Kelly
74-
84-Wilson/Brands
97- Glaizer
285- Costello

I know nothing is settled yet, but a few people have been penciling in Assad at 184, ahead of Brands. Is this just an opinion or has anyone been seeing them wrestle.
TIA

He's not making 174.

I've thought this for a few years now but he always seems to end up at 174. lol

The Nelson/Assad thing feels like a big assumption to make at the current time. I'd be rather surprised if Nelson isn't making a run at 184 and is content to just sit behind Kemerer.

Of course it’s an assumption, we don’t know, If Wilson is at 174 he will be an animal as long as he can pull the weight without a problem

Having two guys the caliber of Brands and Assad battling it out is a good problem to have. Both guys have shown the ability to win big matches, just need more consistency. Iron sharpens iron.

Look. Midlands will decide 184. Nothing against brands, but Assad is a better tournament wrestler. Just a better wrestler against the competition. He holds wins over the 4th, 5th, and 11th ranked wrestlers.

We need someone to get on the podium at 184. That someone is Abe Assad IMO. He's just a more well rounded guy than Nelson Brands is, and he fits the weight better. Brands is a gamer, no doubt about it, but that doesn't score points at NCAA's.

frankly, i like myles wilson's upside at 184 over brands. nelson will always be a board favorite because of his style and family, but we've been down this road twice now. he's not a 184. he doesn't have the offense to win multiple matches at ncaa's against elite, bigger 184's. the only way he beats them is if they take a million terrible shots against him a la venz.

if we're talking about him at 174 or even 165, it's a different discussion.

No Desanto sighting? Seems strange somebody hasnt shown us their bruised under arm yet.
