ORIGINAL POST

The Prime Time League draft is Monday, June 12.

Games get underway at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 18, at the North Liberty Community Center.

There will be six teams made up of Hawkeyes, Northern Iowa Panthers and other local, college-aged talent.

There will be nine chances to see them play, including three at the SportsPlex in Waterloo.

Yes, defense is often optional in summer league play. Yes, these are only exhibitions, intended for fun. But it’s a chance to start forming initial impressions until the real games begin in November.

Here are five things Iowa fans will want to keep an eye on:

1. Big Men on Campus--Nunge and Garza debut.

2. Just Two Veterans--Uhl and Ellingson; time for them to step up.

3. What will Baer and JoBo add to their game?

4. What will we see from Christian Williams?

5. Will Cook show more than just dunking?

I think we know a lot already from last year. Development is hard to gage at the PTL. Garza and Nunge are the top players of interest of course. I suspect we'll be excited for the three point shots and we'll find out both will mis it up well inside. Garza likely being the more willing to get in there and give what he gets. Should be neat also to see if Kriener is ahead of them at this point.

Hawkeye forward Tyler Cook was the No. 1 overall pick in eastern Iowa's top summer basketball league.

Nicholas Baer went No. 2 and Jordan Bohannon went No. 3.

Wyatt Lohaus was the first Northern Iowa player off the board at No. 4.

And Hawkeyes Jack Nunge and Ahmad Wagner rounded out the top six.

In all, 49 current, former or aspiring college basketball players were drafted to PTL's six teams.

Each team has two Hawkeyes and two Panthers.

Iowa's Cordell Pemsl and UNI's Austin Phyfe and Miles Wentzien won't play because of injuries.

And Connor McCaffery will focus on baseball for Iowa City West this summer.

Games will be played from June 18-July 23 in North Liberty and Waterloo.

hooooooooooooooooze going to Sunday's games?

I'll be in Little Rock, AR (yay).

I'll try to get to as many as I can after that, though. Planning on the next two Thursdays, then hopefully the first three nights after July 4th.

Sundays are bad, for now, since my son is playing summer league in Des Moines. The Thursday games actually work out pretty well since we live closer to W'Loo. A bunch of the schools in our conference are in or near there, so I'll be driving it a lot anyway.

wow! you will be making a good chunk of the games. how much can you really learn from these games since no D is being played?

Here is an interesting article where they state this:

Baer and Moss’ team might provide the most intrigue. Watch for Moss, who will be asked to score much more this year without Peter Jok, to challenge for league MVP. And Baer is the perfect teammate to facilitate that scoring explosion; he might be the only guy with more assists than points this summer.

another one from the Gazette:

The league — run by Iowa City’s Randy Larson — was and still is looking for more players, a sign, Larson said, that unattached players in the area are less connected to the league than they used to be, for a variety of reasons.

“We were shorter than usual this year,” Larson said. “For 31 years, I’ve tried not to ask anyone to play, because my feeling is if you’re not knocking on the door begging to play, I don’t want you anyway. We want the truly (committed) basketball player willing to do anything to get better. But the world changes.

“It’s a sign that there are fewer players that are knowledgeable about it. We used to have 1,000 people who applied to play. But if you apply four times and don’t get picked, you don’t apply anymore. So naturally it’s gone down.”

Larson said there initially were going to be seven teams this season — the schedule on the PTL website reflected that before the draft — but the decision was made to go back to six teams like last season to increase the quality of play across the board.

With fewer players in general as well, it worked out.

Still, with 49 players drafted, Larson expects there will be a handful more reach out to him or other coaches in the league to jump onto a roster before the opening games on Sunday at the North Liberty Rec Center. Larson said he’s looking for the pickup players who are willing to come in and play a few minutes and contribute so the teams can remain even while getting to nine or 10 players per team.

I don't really pay attention to the performance, per se. I look at things like handles, repeatable shot, passing, on the ball defense, quucks, etc. More skill than performance.

Well, that and dunks, I like dunks.

Luka Garza, Jack Nunge combine for 76 points in Prime Time League debuts
Matthew Bain , mbain@press-citizen.comPublished 7:37 p.m. CT June 18, 2017 | Updated 2 hours ago

NORTH LIBERTY, Ia. — Luka Garza graduated from the Maret School in Washington D.C. June 12 at 10 a.m. That same day, he flew out to his new home in Iowa City, arriving at about midnight before getting settled in his dorm.

A few hours later, he woke up the morning of June 13 for his first summer school class. And on June 18, he made his public Hawkeye debut with a 41 points and 10 rebounds in the Prime Time League's opening day.

Quite a week for Iowa’s new post player.

"It’s an awesome experience," he said, "and I’m soaking up as much as I can.

"The mindset of this team is unlike anything I've ever been around."

Garza shared the PTL’s main stage Sunday with fellow incoming freshman Jack Nunge, who put up 35 points and 13 rebounds in a 98-97 win over Garza’s team.

Nunge, a more nimble, 6-foot-9 big, immediately flashed the range that earned him an Iowa offer, looking particularly strong at running the floor and handling the ball. He didn’t hesitate to shoot from long distance — going 2-for-6 from there — and he muscled his way to 13 buckets on 17 attempts inside the 3-point arc.

"I’ve been talking to Coach (Fran McCaffery)," Nunge said. "He doesn’t want me above 230 (pounds) because of my mobility. That’s one of my best features, he says, and he likes that about me."

Garza made 16 of his 24 2-point attempts, mostly over-powering or out-maneuvering defenders in the paint. He said he’s already seen improvements in his game after just a week playing against guys like Tyler Cook, Ryan Kriener, Ahmad Wagner and Dom Uhl in practice.

"I can tell just by the way I approach every game," Garza said. "Those guys are so physical. None of our centers are alike. None of our big men are alike. We all have different styles. We all do different things in the post and that’s been great for me to go against.

Lmk if you get to Waterloo...would love to meet you and maybe walk across to SS for a beer.

Just as long as someone points out to Nunge and Garza that what they are seeing is decidedly NOT the defenses they will be seeing in B1G play.

Overall, the most significant news I've heard all night has been how well Kriener has improved his game. He gives us a solid cadre of bigs.

Someone must have lit his fire over the offseason

Kriener definitely has a sweet jump shot and i think his rebounding is only gong to get better; and damn, i love his hustle; he has bought into Fran's philosophy, which is to bust your butt when on the court and when gassed, he will pull you
