The news agencies are saying he will announce a plan to close Gitmo in an hour or so. I figured we should get our thoughts on record ahead of his announcement.
He can't bring the prisoners to the US. That's the law. Is there any wiggle room for a presidential order to bring them here? I doubt it. So what will he do with them?
Some of the prisoners can presumably be sent home. But some nations have already refused to take them, and our law says we can't send them back if they could be tortured or killed.
Has Obama made a deal with some other country? If so, how much did we pay for that?
How about just letting them out of their cages? What would happen? Offer them jobs. Let them make phone calls to see who would be willing to take them in. Just release them. Maybe change our personnel there so there aren't obvious targets for revenge crimes.
If they sneak across the line into Cuba, they aren't our problem any more. Payback for the Marielitos.
What would you do?
What would you like Obama to do?
