Nov 19 INJURY Updates;Iowa Practices on FRIDAY;Wirfs on moving to LT: Like wiping butt w/ other hand

Sorry if already posted, but how did we come out of this game with injuries do we know?

What follows is from the Cedar Rapids Gazette, postgame. Luckily, it looks like we did not add anyone to the list.

Injury Report

The Hawkeyes seemed to have as good a game from a health aspect as from the scoreboard standpoint.

Among those who didn’t play because of previous injuries:

* Offensive tackle Alaric Jackson (knee), was out for the third-straight game. He was, however, in uniform and went through warm-ups with the team, and is a good bet to return in the next game.

Others who missed the Sep 28 game:

* Offensive guard Kyler Schott (foot)
* Defensive Tackle Brady Reiff
* DB Matt Hankins
* DB Kaevon Merriweather

* DB Julius Brents
* DB
Riley Moss

OL Cole Banwart, who missed the first two games with a leg injury, started in Schott’s place at right guard.

I did see Stone on the ground on one play and they didn’t mention anything about it. Then he was back by the time I could notice if in or out. Anyone know if/how many series missed and what it was that took him out?

Hope he’s a go as IMO besides AJE the player we can ill afford to lose on that side.

I'm hoping Jackson is cleared to play, this Saturday.

A starting Offensive line of Alaric, L Paulson, T Linderbaum, C Banwart and T Wirfs is
needed to get after MeatAgain, up there.

Go Hawks

As noted above,

* Offensive tackle Alaric Jackson (knee), was out for the third-straight game. He was, however, in uniform and went through warm-ups with the team, and is a good bet to return in the next game.

@rchawk we'll know more on Tuesday regarding everyone else.

Here is an update after Sunday Sep 29's "Sunday Conversation with Kirk Ferentz."

If I am missing anyone, let me know.

During a Game Week:
Wed: Iowa wraps up preparations
Thur: No practice
Fri: Light practice (when Sargent was injured)

Here is a Timeline for when 13 dinged up/injured Hawkeyes are hopefully back on the field.

Should be Good to go Saturday, October 5 vs. Michigan:

OL Alaric Jackson (sprained knee). On Sun Sep 29 KF said that barring any setbacks this week, he should return to game action Polasek said AJ had an "outside chance" at playing on Sep 28 vs Middle Tennessee, but he DID NOT. Instead, he was out for the third straight game. He was, however, in uniform and went through warm-ups with the team, and is a good bet to return for the Oct 5 Michigan game. He was still dealing with a bone bruise during the Sep 21 bye week. On Sep 24 KF said that he didn't think any of the guys who missed the last game on Sep 14 would be back for the Sep 28 game and he was right.

FS Sophomore Kaevon Merriweather--a right foot injury; will NOT need surgery. On Sun Sep 29 KF said that barring any setbacks this week, he should return to game action. He did not play vs the the Clowns. Jack Koerner got his second straight start as a result. Per Phil Parker, it will be difficult for Merriweather to beat out & get his job back from Koerner. He practiced during the Sep 21 bye week. On Sep 24 KF said that he didn't think any of the guys who missed the last game on Sep 14 would be back for the Sep 28 game and he was right.

OL Tristan Wirfs (knee)

DB Geno Stone (knee, shoulder); heading into the Sep 28 game, Stone said his body feels like it's week 1 again. In the Sep 28 Middle Tennessee game, there was concern he hurt his shoulder but he should be fine.

WR Brandon Smith (shoulder/collarbone); he got dinged up in the Sep 14 Iowa State game but based on his play on Sep 28 vs Middle Tennessee, he is fine.

RB Mekhi Sargent (right hand injury suffered in Fri Sep 13 practice); he is left hand dominant, which helps some; on Sep 24, Sargent said the wrist feels “normal” now.

OL Cole Banwart (leg injury); was a 7 game starter in 2018; on Sep 14 Banwart was back in the rotation on the offensive line vs the Clowns; he was the #2 center. On Sep 24 it was reported that Cole is 100% healthy now & would start at Right Guard in place of Schott. Cole missed the first two games because of that leg injury.

Status Unclear for the Oct 5 Michigan game:

DB Matt Hankins (hamstring) -- Was held out of the Sep 28 Middle Tennessee game; On Sep 14, did not get off the bus vs Clown U; DJ Johnson started in his place. On Sep 10, Leistikow reported that Kirk Ferentz's answer on Matt Hankins' status for the Cy-Hawk game was mostly cloudy. Then on Wed Sep 11, Ferentz, on his radio show, said that Iowa would play it by ear whether the junior starting cornerback would play at Iowa State. For the Sep 14 Clown game, Matt did not get off the team bus. HOWEVER, on Sep 14 Marc Morehouse reported this: Whomever plays for Hankins (vs Clown U) probably gets Sept. 28 game vs. MTSU. NOTE: DJ Johnson was in for Hankins. On Sep 24 KF said that he didn't think any of the guys who missed the last game on Sep 14 would be back for the Sep 28 game and he was right.

DT Brady Reiff (knee injury) -- On Sep 14 did not get off team bus vs Clown U; Daviyon Nixon started in his place. On Sep 24 KF said that he didn't think any of the guys who missed the last game on Sep 14 would be back for the Sep 28 game and he was right. KF clarified that Reiff was definitely out for the Sep 28 game (despite being listed on the depth chart in error)

DB Julius Brents (knee injury)--on Sep 3 was reported he'd be out a couple of weeks. On Sep 24 KF said that he didn't think any of the guys who missed the last game on Sep 14 would be back for the Sep 28 game and he was right.

Likely Out until mid October (ready by Oct 12 Penn State game?)

OL Kyler Schott (injured foot on Sunday Sep 22)-- On Sep 24 KF said Kyler would be out a couple weeks.

DB Riley Moss (knee injury)--on Sep 3 was reported that he was out 4-6 weeks with leg injury.

Joe Evans (hamstring) -- Joe is a redshirt freshman; he joined the team in 2018 as a walk on; he participated in the Rutgers game.

Remember this about Merriweather:

FS Sophomore Kaevon Merriweather--a right foot injury; will NOT need surgery. On Sun Sep 29 KF said that barring any setbacks this week, he should return to game action. He did not play vs the the Clowns. Jack Koerner got his second straight start as a result. Per Phil Parker, it will be difficult for Merriweather to beat out & get his job back from Koerner. Iowa hopes to break out of 'survival' mode this week with Injuries
Offensive tackle Alaric Jackson will return and, maybe more importantly, the secondary will have a few more bodies

Marc Morehouse / The Cedar Rapids Gazette
October 1, 2019

IOWA CITY — The Hawkeyes started their No. 5 cornerback on the road at Iowa State. Also, their No. 3 safety and their No. 3 offensive tackle who also happens to be one of their better guards.

And a starting defensive tackle also was out. Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz referred to this Tuesday as “survival.”

“Any time you can survive injuries to starters and guys can go in and play and hopefully not just get by but play well, that’s a positive certainly because that’s how you build depth,” Ferentz said. “There’s no better way than game competition. You can’t substitute that.”

No. 14 Iowa (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) found a way to win by the narrowest of margins in Ames. Last week was not a competitive situation. This week, it’s No. 19 Michigan (3-1, 1-1). It’s go time and the Hawkeyes should have a few more bodies available.

— Offensive tackle Alaric Jackson will return this week. The 6-6, 320-pounder from Detroit, Mich., suffered a sprained knee in Iowa’s opener and hasn’t played since.

Senior Levi Paulsen slid to right tackle. Junior Tristan Wirfs has surfed between right and left tackle, while sophomore Mark Kallenberger also has soaked up some of that “game competition” Ferentz mentioned.

Yes, the Hawkeyes have started the same O-line just twice this season. You’ve seen between seven and eight players rotate every week. In last week’s 48-3 blowout over Middle Tennessee State, Iowa played 11 offensive linemen.

This is the upside of injury. Sort of. The show goes on and the replacements figure it out.

“The whole trick is surviving it, and I think the offensive line has done a pretty good job of managing the bumps through the first four weeks, and getting A.J. (Jackson) back will certainly help us, and hopefully we’ll be a more diversified group now,” Ferentz said.

— Senior defensive tackle Brady Reiff (knee) hasn’t practiced this week and likely is out. That probably means a three-man rotation with senior Cedrick Lattimore, junior Austin Schulte and sophomore Daviyon Nixon.

— The news is mixed with the secondary.

Junior cornerback Matt Hankins (hamstring) hasn’t practiced this week and is likely out. Free safety Kaevon Merriweather and corner Julius Brents will return this week.

Merriweather started the opener before suffering a foot sprain. He was replaced by sophomore Jack Koerner, who now has three career starts compared to Merriweather’s one.

“Koerner has got a 3-1 edge in experience,” Ferentz said. “Kaevon came in as the starter, but he came in and played one game. It’s not the same discussion as Jackson, who’s played two years for us now. We know who he is and what he is.

“But you’ll see both those guys playing, and the way it’s worked out, I think everybody is going to have plenty of opportunity.”

Merriweather should add depth and probably will see time on special teams. That’s probably the same deal for Brents, who hasn’t played in a game since Purdue on Nov. 3 last season.

But bodies are good, too.

“It would be nice to have some options at least,” Ferentz said. “I guess that’s the deal, but I really see him (Brents), hopefully, helping out on special teams this week, and maybe in some sub packages, things like that.”

Redshirt freshman D.J. Johnson started the season as Iowa’s No. 5 corner and starter in the 4-2-5 cash package. The 5-11, 183-pounder from Indianapolis, Ind., has been the starter since Hankins left the Rutgers game in the fourth quarter.

With so many injuries in the secondary, Iowa has been limited in what it could do with personnel. Against Iowa State — a super-close, competitive rivalry game on the road — Iowa used just 13 players on defense, with nine going the entire way.

The 4-2-5 was used once at Iowa State and a few more times last week. Michigan is finding its way on offense under first-year coordinator Josh Gattis, who head coach Jim Harbaugh brought to implement an Air Raid passing game with RPOs.

Granted, the Wolverines faced No. 8 Wisconsin and got pinned, but total offense and rushing game are ranked 10th in the league in average yards per game. There is a mound of talent in the receiving corps with Ronnie Bell, Tarik Black, Nico Collins and Donovan Peoples-Jones.

This might be a week where the 4-2-5 comes in handy.

“I’m not sure that’s going to be a staple this week, but we have been doing it a little more in practice,” corner Michael Ojemudia said. “With guys coming back, it’s going to be a lot better for us on the back end.”

DB Julius Brents (knee injury) -- REMINDER: Brents hasn’t played in a game since Purdue on Nov. 3 last season. On Oct 1 KF said that he practiced today and was looking good to play in the Oct 5 Michigan game. He will help out on SPECIAL TEAMS & MAYBE IN SUB PACKAGES. This would be his FIRST GAME ACTION OF 2019. DJ Johnson & Ojemudia will continue to start at cornerback On Sep 3 was reported he'd be out a couple of weeks. On Sep 24 KF said that he didn't think any of the guys who missed the last game on Sep 14 would be back for the Sep 28 game and he was right.

NOT LOOKING GOOD for the Oct 5 Michigan game:

Joe Evans (hamstring) -- Joe is a redshirt freshman; he joined the team in 2018 as a walk on; he participated in the Rutgers game.

Is there any chance we see Hankins? Or am I beyond hope?
Sure doesn’t sound like it.

Damn hammy injuries.
Probably not. Big test for DJ. If he performs well he is going to be another one of those corners that we can put in the NFL because he’s going up against the best wideouts he’s ever seen. He needs to step up and have a big game or we are toast

As you can see in previous post:

DB Matt Hankins (hamstring) -- Hankins left the Rutgers game in the fourth quarter. On Oct 1 Marc Morehouse reported that Hankins hadn’t practiced this week and is likely out for the Oct 5 Michigan game. Was held out of the Sep 28 Middle Tennessee game as well. On Sep 14, Matt did not get off the bus vs Clown U.

Might see Brents and Mayweather, though. Having a third experienced cornerback and safety available is pretty huge for this game.

Brents hasn't played since Nov 3 of last year.

As noted in 2 posts directly above:

FS Sophomore Kaevon Merriweather-- (right foot sprain) Kaevon will NOT need surgery. Kaevon was a starter in the season opener. Jack Koerner now has three career starts compared to Merriweather’s one. On Oct 1 KF said that Kaevon practiced today and was looking good to play in the Oct 5 Michigan game. Brady Reiff has missed the last couple games and will miss the Oct 5 Michigan game as well.

Jay Niemann was asked if he could be back for the Oct 12 Penn State game. This is what he had to say on the Wednesday evening KxNO HawkCentral radio show:

I'm not in a position to talk about that; that would be something Coach Ferentz would have to handle but he is on a very positive track in terms of his recovery. He's been out on the field this week doing some stuff, so we like where he's at. Brady had a really good start to the season. He's kind of the unsung hero of that D Line, in my opinion, he played so well early; I can't tell you the number of times we pointed him out for great effort plays; he's just such a consistent guy and really a rock solid interior player for us so obviously it's in our best interest, and in his, to get him out there as quickly as we can."

Brents hasn't played this year because he's been hurt. But if he's healthy, truly healthy, he's an excellent CB and will definitely be used against Michigan in passing situations. He was like glue on WRs last year. He's athletic as hell and has great instincts. If he hadn't been hurt he would have been the guy backing up Hankins when he went down. Hopefully, Johnson has more confidence and understanding of his responsibilities because Michigan will definitely test him. I know I would if I was Michigan's OC.

its crazy to think that the last time we saw Brents was Nov 3 of last year. Looks like he might see some action when Iowa goes to the 4-2-5.

I think Michigan is gonna try to pass its way to victory; I hope our defensive backfield is up to the challenge

With Brady Reiff out, 2 Hawkeyes have stepped up BIG TIME.

Here's what KF had to say yesterday:

"With Brady (Reiff) out, Austin Schulte has started the last two weeks, but he and Daviyon (Nixon) are splitting those reps and those guys are doing a good job. This is Austin's first significant playing time, the same thing with Daviyon, and pleased with the growth we are seeing out of both those players."
