Looking at the current top 6 teams, there is the possibility of playing the other 5 teams a total of 10 times during the conference regular season. Then, of course, you play the other 8 conference teams once (4 home, 4 away).

As you can see below, Indiana and Michigan State only have 6 of those possible 10 games.

Iowa, on the other hand, has 9 of those possible 10 games.

Couple other scheduling notes:

IU plays 0-11 Minny twice and Michigan State plays 0-10 Rutgers twice, where Iowa plays Minny and Rutgers once.

IU, MSU and Iowa play MD once. However, when you dive in further, you will notice that IU and MSU get MD at home whereas Iowa played MD at their place.

Good information, but kind of confused. Which of these games does each of these teams have left to play?

I think he's talking about for the entire season. Iowa definitely has the toughest conference schedule in the B10, playing most of the best teams twice and most of the worst teams only once.

Fortunately, our schedule was front-heavy, whereas Indiana's schedule is back-heavy. So our schedule from here out is easier than Indiana's. Of course, since we and Indiana play twice that will play a major factor.

yeah, i am looking at the entire conf schedule.

i updated the orig post. as you can see, IU has 5 of those 6 games left to be played. Iowa has played 6 of their 9 games to date.

at this point in the season, the teams Iowa has played have a combined record in B1G play of 51-50, 50-41 if you exclude games against Iowa. The teams that Indiana has played have a combined record of 35-68, 34-59 if you exclude games against Indiana. So yeah, Indiana has had a little bit of an easier schedule so far.
For the full schedule, Indiana opponents are 84-100, while Iowa's are 93-90. When you consider the conference in total will have even wins and losses, 16 game under .500 is pretty bad.

Wow....thanks for the update. ...and that looks awesome for the Hawks. It gives you an idea of why we are getting so much love from kenpom.

I've got to think that in the long run this benefits us. There aren't any easy games in the NCAA and you've got to play tough every game. I doubt Indiana can give 100% effort 2-3 games in a row.

what Iowa has done in the first 10 games of the B1G schedule is beyond elite. IF...(sorry I never count on anything)...this team continues at this pace..

..the names of
Gesell
Clemmons
Jok
Uthoff
Woodbury
(Uhl/Baer)...
will go down as one of the very best in Iowa BB history..

I practically lived with the 1970 team:
Brown
Calabria
Vidnovic
Johnson

it would great if the 2016 team can go down in history being mentioned with some of the very best Iowa teams of the past & basically 3 of the 5 starters grew up in Iowa...might as well say Gesell...as the 4th.

This is very possible but they still have a lot of work to do.

I agree that this is a good thing for Iowa.

here's the deal, Hawk fans... with this team and the probability that we'll be at least a 3 seed, you have to think of which one you'd rather have and for the purposes of my post you cannot have both:

1) B1G championship
2) Final Four (or better)

I know what I want. But I sense many people posting here care more about the other one.

The 1970 team was the first year I really followed basketball close -- mainly because Freddy Brown had played JuCo in my hometown. Hardly any games were televised, but I listened to every game on the transistor radio. What I have found myself thinking about is how the games seem similar. In 69/70 they always seemed to work their way up to a 10/15 point lead and hold onto that the entire game. I have to admit, though, that Brown, Johnson, and Glenn "The Stick" Vidnovic are the only names that I really remember well.

There's no doubt that, of the contenders, we have played the toughest schedule. That will just make all that sweeter when we win the Big Ten title.

Next two are huge. Hawks have been great at taking games one at a time. Let's beat a talented, but undisciplined Illannoy team Sunday, and then we can go to Bloomington and find out just how good the Hosers are. Win those two games, and Iowa really will be in the driver's seat for the B1G championship.

IF we were to win the B1G championship, this team has to go down as one of the best of all time, especially since we have not won a conference championship since 1979 (37 years ago!); but, we almost need to make a run in the Big Dance, too; Sweet 16 at least!

Yes, Iowa can have its cake and it plans on eating it too, regardless of what rules you want to impose on them.

This team is great and fun to watch, but they would not fare well against the 6 pack. That team would make this one look like they were playing in quick sand.

Ralph made a bunch of lifetime Hawkeye fans even if he did it with a lot of juco's.

It's been known all season that we had a majorly tough B1G schedule. That's why everyone including our own fan base was shocked by our good start in the first 8 games.

If we go 6-2 down the stretch and 15-3 we should share or win the title out-right.

I just find it interesting that we play 9 of the possible 10 toughest games where IU and MSU have to play just 6; that's a huge advantage.

In addition, IU playing MN twice and MSU playing Rutgers twice is huge.

And we have to play MD on the road where IU and MSU got MD at home.

IU has taken advantage of their easy schedule; MSU hasn't.

Agree but that's life now with the unbalanced schedule. Some years it might work out to our advantage within the B1G. The good news is it keeps our SOS high and is probably one of the reasons we are being considered at this point a possible 1-2 seed. That may hold if we finish strong.

Indiana might turn out to be the best team they just got the benefit of an easier schedule. Not their fault as you have to play who is on your schedule.

Wonder how far that 70's team could have gone if it had played defense? It was not a normal Miller coached team, but I guess he learned from the previous year (12-12) that he'd better let those seniors do their own thing, which was shoot, plus Brown was added.

Great point. Beating Rutgers twice will do nothing to help improve MSU's tourny resume. If the Hawks had played IND's schedule they'd probably be ranked like IND, around 20th.

The 1970 team will never be topped...cannot beat 14-0! But this team can join a small group of great Hawk teams.

My favs.....

1964-65---super sammy williams peoples, pervall
1970
1979- RONNIE!!
1980- Ronnie, again
1986-87... Roy & the boys

And now...2016!! hopefully....win the league and a run to Elite 8 would cement it.

I don't think Pepper was "imposing" anything ...simply posing a "what if" you could only have one of those outcomes scenario.

good points.

its just weird how easy IU got it this year. They only play 6 "tough games." They play the worst MN team in 93 years TWICE. They play MD ONCE, and at HOME.

Beating Rutgers twice does help a couple things:
* Chance at winning the B1G title is greater when you play Rutgers twice (11% of MSU's B1G schedule is vs Rutgers)
* Your B1G Tourney seeding is likely to be better when your schedule is easier (easier schedule likely means more wins and a better place finish in the B1G regular season)

Its interesting that Indiana has only played 1 game against the top 6 and has 5 games left against the top 6, yet they now have 2 losses in B1G play (at Wisc, at Penn St)

IOWA, on the other had, has played 6 games against the top 6 and has 3 games to go against the top 6, yet they only have 1 loss in B1G play

As you can see, all of the other Top 6 teams have played at least 4 games against the top 6 to date.

So your answer is that you'd rather win a conference championship than make the final four. I suspected many were in your camp. Good to see you at least admit it???

Hell, since we already are playing 9 out of the 10 toughest possible games against the top 6 teams in the B1G, it's too bad that we don't play all 10 games. That way we would get Maryland at home and it would probably be for all the marbles.

It is hard to see note of the "great" Iowa teams of the past and note that perhaps the best of all were the 1955 and 1956 teams. Both WON the conference championship and went to the Final Four, and in 1956 to the Championship game where they lost to Bill Russell, the all-time great from San Francisco University. And that championship group beat Indiana in 1954 when Indiana went on to win the national championship.
