I found it interesting that the teams off day is now Thursday instead of Monday. Also the team will practice in the morning instead of the afternoon. With most games being in the morning, it makes sense but moving classes to the afternoon is a big change. Players are going to need to go to practice and then class and then back to the facility to watch film.

I actually do like the Thursday day off move because that will give the guys an extra day on Monday to start looking at the next opponent. Go hard in full pads on Tues and Wed and then "day off" full of film study on Thurs, walk thru Friday morning.

Sounds like a good move to me. especially the morning practices. Sounds like the players love the move. I agree with them it is much harder to get going for practice after a day in the class room. In the morning is when your focus is the best so why not practice then? Also love the Thursday as an off day.

The best thing about this, IMHO, is that it is different. And we all know when it comes to KF, "different" has been about as welcome as an RB with rabies. As much as I want the post-KF era to begin yesterday, if we're going to be stuck with him, then the least he can do is TRY something different.

So to me, this is monumental and could, finally, signal that KF realizes it's time to change it up around Fort Kinnick. Morning practices, a different day off...I love it. Now let's make use of the changes by throwing the ball down field, taking intelligent risks, running some trick plays EVERY game, and letting the kids have some FUN. Players love to have fun on Saturdays even more than they love practicing in the morning.

CJ is the man to build an aggressive offense around, the defense has a chance to be pretty good, and if the Hawks can return to the days of really special special teams, well, gol darn it, 2015 could be a different season than the one many are expecting.

Different is good. Different breeds hope.

I agree.

What this off-season has told me is...Kirk is feeling the heat. Whether it is from Barta, the fans, donors, or himself...I think he realizes he needs to pull a good season out of his hat this year. Now...if he continues to play ultra-conservative football, then obviously I'm wrong. But I don't think he will. I think Kirk is going "all in" this year. I will be surprised if we DON'T see more aggressive play, and a more wide-open offense.

A more aggressive offensive attack won't be part of the new-look Hawkeyes.

"My suggestion would be it's more about how you play than the style of play you choose," Ferentz said.

Well, so much for that.

Got an exciting QB who is not afraid to make plays and go down the field? Every other coach would run an offense that utilizes that QB's talents and takes advantage of his strengths. But not Kirk. Oh no, gotta pound that square peg into a round hole.

For a minute there, I thought there would be meaningful change. Doesn't look like it. Hope it still happens.

an "aggressive" attack has never been part of Kirk's S.O.P. what did happen, particularly during his best years, was being able to take a shot, via trick play, fake punt, etc., when it was called for. what happened instead was the opposite. iowa got burned by those plays a few times, and kirk seemed to get scared off by them and veered away from anything that could blow up in his face.

I don't think anyone would be asking for a "more aggressive offense" if the offense they run would simply work. An off tackle running play looks fine if it goes for 15 yards. When the same play goes for 2, it looks "conservative". A pass play where the ball is thrown 12 yards and the receiver runs for another 15 looks "aggressive". That same play that is incomplete is conservative - and even more conservative when the QB checks down to the RB for a 1 yd gain.

Calling plays is easy compared to executing plays. Executing plays is easier when the defense doesn't know what's coming.

I don't care what offense they run or what plays they call. I'd be happy if the defense didn't always know what play was coming and more of them simply "worked".
