We have a junior, three sophomores and a freshmen starting. Backups include a freshman, two sophomores and a junior. Not sure about Fagan. A Five star and four star next year coming in. In two years our line should be dominant, having Johnson and Patterson in the back field, look out.

I get that you are saying we are young....but instead of "wait til next year"...

It's now "wait until 2 years from now, then we'll be good!"

KF and company need to embrace the transfer portal. A position like Oline, where we have YEARS of success at putting guys in the league, should be one Offensive position that we can sell to recruits.
Modern recruiting is clearly an issue on this staff just like QB development.

Fagan,DeJong, and Plumb will be gone. Honestly no one has any idea who will be around in 2 years given today's game.

Look out? Dude. It's overhaul time. We made some bad recruiting errors. Just plain misses.

That entire OL needs to be replaced this offseason, literally. Get 7-8 transfers, a new OL coach (new HC and OC would be helpful, also) and start from scratch. That is the only way to fix this. KF has had a handful of underperforming OLs in his time here, but NEVER as bad as they've been for 2 CONSECUTIVE YEARS now, and it is being overexposed due to the ineptness of the QB. This line has shown ZERO development since last year, and most of the guys have regressed, so I don't know how someone can conclude that this OL is just a little bit of more experience away from being dominant. Just not the case. Time to blow it up.

and we've had multiple 4 stars lately that were suppose to be near "stud" level right now

first thing we do is get a new ol coach, nobody can debate that

I totally agree. People have to realize that L. Jones and B. Stephens are first year players and Elsbury is also playing for the first time. Jones and Colby are playing new positions this year. Inexperience always gets exposed with that many new faces. It isn't surprising that they are struggling this season, but I agree that the future looks bright. All of these guys have talent and with Proctor coming next year we should have a srong OL. A lot of the experts that post here have concluded that Barnett can't coach , but it is way too soon for that conclusion. I think the OL will be trending upward for the remainder of this season and into the future.

Maybe so, but in two years this amazing offensive line will be paired with a different starting QB struggling to learn this super-complex offensive scheme. Once Spencer is gone we crumble back to square one.

Someone as old as you should know better than to say things such as “our line should be dominant” etc. I recall posts in 2020 predicting all the young talent in the OL we had would make for a dominant OL in 2022. How’s that worked out?

Biggest false narrative are people who “assume” young players mean eventually great players. Often doesn’t happen. Sometimes young kids play because there’s nobody better to play and he’s getting beat up because in part he’s not that good.

Let’s let players develop before throwing silly monikers on them.

According to Gunner they’re struggling just because they’re young.he assumes people like Jones at center will just become great because he’s young now.Guess what? He gets so dominated now because mechanically he looks like he may never be better than average.Linderbaum became great because he developed AND had talent- not everyone has immense talent.

This. In this day and age, every program out there is filling these holes with transfers. You cannot go into a season with known holes in your team and expect to succeed against teams that are ensuring they don't have holes.

I think the free and easy transfer rules are a bigger change to college football than NIL and teams that don't leverage it will struggle to compete consistently.

But, in some ways, it goes further. Not only do you need to leverage it to fill in weak spots, you need to work to keep the players you have and probably plan for some extra attrition due to the portal. If you don't, you risk going into the season not filling all your scholarship positions which is a weakness in the same way that oversigning is a strength.

It ain't going away....play the game or get out. Don't kill the program sticking to values that are noble but futile and obsolete.

This obsession with the transfer portal. Who were the O-lineman that transferred this offseason, that KF passed up on?
As stated in another post, I've been an SMU season ticket holder for 7 years. SMU using the portal as much as any team. These kids are transferring because they can't get playing time at their current school. Good luck getting them to buy into the concept of sacrificing for their teammates.
Coy Cronk just impressed you so much?

Bert B built an identity in 2 years using the transfer portal.... GA, Bama, OSU have all taken advantage of it. The portal is not an end all be all, many of those kids are in there because they thought they were better than they are. Many kids that are in there, like 5th year guys such as Cronk, could atheist give us another options. If nothing else, bringing in new blood occasionally breeds healthy competition.

It's true he should not be compared to TL. But he does not get dominated all the time. I watch the replays and focus on ol play and I can tell you for sure that he dishes out some paybacks. Consistency is huge for all those young guys. Lateral movement is key and can be improved on, not hopeless.

I'm not suggesting he gets dominated all the time, but I also just don't see him being anything close to All Big Ten calliber anytime either.

So how many years does Barnett get rewarded for what appears to be complete job failure? 5? 6? I bet you’re A Ok with Brian getting additional years too…

And (2)… who gives a shit now but I suppose you’re right - they can ONLY trend upward at this point.. We’re six games in and they’ve completely blown this season. Sucks, to say the least, to be a final-year player like #31.

And when you’re delt a “hand” such as a group with minimal experience playing together…coaching and development comes into play… i.e. doing your job.

I see glimpses...thrown to the wolves too early. Where's Myslinski?

At this stage I'm just assuming he's not good enough to break the lineup. I think we all assumed that because he originally was a commit to Texas that he must be great, but it doesn't always work out that way. It does tell me something when a player from a completely different position is moved over to cover a position where one kid has played it most of his life.

Look to past recruiting class failures, good players leaving early and portal whiffs which cannot be on Barnett. Having said that you could be right about him. Next year is key.

Well he was injured at a critical time. Going on memory he had other good offers I believe. I'm not convinced Texas has a good staff.

Yeah, there are so many many examples we can use of guys who never materialized that we had high hopes for. Doerring, Larson- two 5 star OL who barely saw the playing field at Iowa. Malcolm Chrstie back to Hayden's days-- high heralded OL from Jersey who barely got to play.

For this line to ever be dominant, we need multiple guys who will develop into pro caliber players. Think back on our OL that made the NFL…who looked this bad in their third year in the program? Boettger? Gettis? I don’t even think those guys looked this lost at that point.

If Reese was still around, then I would feel better. But I haven’t seen a thing from this current staff that gives me hope that this group is going to magically turn a corner. Get a new OL coach, then maybe we can talk.

But I have heard nothing but "gushing" remarks from KF relating to Barnett the OL coach. But I admit that at this stage I'm beginning to question a lot of Kirk's evaluations of both coaches and certain players. Too many people contiue to give him the benefit of the doubt in this regard.

Michigan’s starting center this year was a Rimington finalist last year at Virginia I believe(pretty sure I read we offered him too). There are some really good players in there every year. To the OPs point, experience typically matters quite a bit in the trenches.

I don’t know, Texas is playing some guys younger than we are and they are playing very well. Now that I think about it, I don’t think Myslinski would’ve been recruited by the current Texas staff. So, never mind, haha.
