ESPN.com: Ranking the Top 25 players in the Women's Sweet 16

1. Caitlin Clark, Iowa

G | 6-foot | junior | Previous: 1
2022-23 stats:
26.8 PPG, 7.3 RPG, 8.6 APG

Clark's passing (24 assists) has been as much of a key to Iowa's two NCAA tournament victories as her scoring (48 points). After cruising against SE Louisiana in the first round, the Hawkeyes were tested by Georgia's defense. Clark was able to keep her cool against the Lady Bulldogs even when things got tense, scoring the last six points in a 74-66 victory. This will be her second Sweet 16 appearance; the other was in her freshman season. -- Voepel

12. Hailey Van Lith, Louisville

G | 5-foot-7 | junior | Previous: NR
2022-23 stats:
19.5 PPG, 3.2 APG

Van Lith's stellar start to the NCAA tournament has Louisville eyeing a fifth-consecutive Elite Eight berth. She is averaging 23.5 points on 51.4% shooting, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals over the first two games, and her clutch shot-making was critical for the Cardinals to outlast a tough Drake squad. Louisville needs more contributors around her and must play outstanding on the defensive end should it wish to return to the Final Four for the second consecutive year. But there's no doubt Van Lith is the head of the snake; when she gets going, she and Louisville can be difficult to stop. -- Philippou

14. Monika Czinano, Iowa

F/C | 6-foot-3 | senior | Previous: 19
2022-23 stats:
17.5 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 67.5% FG

We first think of Czinano's ultra-reliable offense in the paint, and it's been excellent: She made 19 of 28 shots in the early rounds for a combined 42 points. But against the size of Georgia inside during the Hawkeyes' second-round win, Czinano also had to come up big defensively. She had nine rebounds and two steals, with both of those coming in the final three minutes. -- Voepel

19. Gabbie Marshall, Iowa

G | 5-foot-9 | senior | Previous: NR
2022-23 stats:
6.0 PPG, 1.6 RPG, 38.2% 3FG

Marshall's season-long averages don't stand out, but her performance in March does. In Iowa's five games this month, in the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments, Marshall is averaging 11.8 points and has made 20 of 39 shots from behind the arc (51.3%). Marshall, also Iowa's best perimeter defender, picked the best time to get hot offensively. -- Voepel

23. Jaylyn Sherrod, Colorado Buffaloes

G | 5-foot-7 | senior | Previous: NR
2022-23 stats:
11.3 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 4.9 APG, 2.4 SPG

No player in the tournament, perhaps no player in college basketball, is as fast with the ball in her hand than Sherrod. Her explosiveness from baseline to baseline creates a one-player fast break. Even a defense as good as Duke had trouble containing that speed. Sherrod was vital in Colorado's quick start against the Blue Devils, and then her composure was key in the overtime as the Buffs held on in Durham for their first Sweet 16 in 21 years. -- Creme

24. Angel Baker, Ole Miss Rebels

G | 5-foot-8 | senior | Previous: NR
2022-23 stats:
14.9 PPG, 5.4 RPG, 2.5 APG

Very few brackets had No. 8 seed Ole Miss upsetting three-time NCAA champion and No. 1 seed Stanford 54-49 in the second round, but Baker helped make it happen. She has had a big March Madness moment before, though. Baker spent her first three seasons at Wright State, and had 26 points and 12 rebounds in the Raiders' 2021 NCAA first-round upset of then-No. 4 seed Arkansas. Her 13 points Sunday led the offense in the Rebels' defensive stranglehold on Stanford. She will be a big key for Ole Miss to now try to beat another 2022 Final Four team, Louisville. -- Voepel

The Full Story/List:

Actually I do. The one play I recall Hannah playing n, she practically bounced off the bigger player as CU scored, made me think the match-up wasn’t as good for her.

Yeah, battling for rebounds was gonna be tough; it's just that everyone was wondering where she was and if she aggravated her injury. Glad to hear she's healthy.

This Louisville-Ole Miss game has basically been a 5 point game the entire time but Louisville seems in total control. I think Louisville is the worse matchup for us. Not sure what happened during the season but they started the year top 10.

Ole Miss is severely challenged offensively.

I know nothing about basketball but what makes you think they’re a bad matchup? Seems like Georgia and CU would have been bad matchups too, no?

The Hawkeye starters have played nearly the entire game against both Georgia and Colorado.
Could be some fatigue against what looks like a fairly athletic opponent on only two day's rest.

Well, Louisville it is.

#2 IOWA (29-6)

vs

#5 Louisville (26-11)

8 pm CT, ESPN

So it's going to be (2) Iowa vs (5) Louisville in the Elite 8 on Sunday -- 8 PM CT on ESPN.

Winner goes to the Final Four in Dallas, TX.

Louisville is making its 8th Elite 8 appearance. The Cardinals are 4-3 in their seven prior Elite 8 games, including wins in 2009, 2013, 2018, and 2022. They were NCAA runners-up (to UConn) in 2009 and 2013.

In fact, this is the 5th straight season that Louisville has played in the Elite 8 (not counting 2020, when the tournament was canceled). The Cardinals are very familiar with this stage.

This is also the second-straight year that Louisville has played a Big Ten team in the Elite 8. The Cardinals beat Michigan 62-50 last season.

The Buffs center was the most massive woman I've ever seen. She made Monika look skinny. Smart coaching move. Ninety percent of the time you'd want Hannah on the floor, but I think she would have been overwhelmed. The bigger center was the smart play in this game. Outside of outrageous officiating, like tonight, there really aren't a lot of bench minutes for Iowa. Very different look next year.

I like our chances and I can't wait to wipe that smug smile off their coach's face.

More athletic. Better pedigree, recently etc etc.

Van Lith is another top player and will be protected.

Other than that we should feel good about this matchup...............................

Yeah Louisville is going to be bad matchup for us
?
would you rather play Notre Dame (they beat Louisville twice this season)
Maryland?
UConn?
South Carolina?
Virginia Tech ? (also beat Louisville twice)
Tenn?
Even #9 seed Miami won at Indiana, basically leading the entire game. They are playing very well right now.
LSU 31-3 ?

See where I am going with this? Of all the teams left, who would you rather play for a spot in the final 4? They are all good. Iowa is not so bad either...

I meant between the two teams last night. Ole Miss would’ve been the easier out.

But as long as Louisville’s athleticism doesn’t get the best of us, we should be able to hang with the way we’re playing.

Louisville will only have 2 day's rest, too.

Could be, but we managed to navigate the B1G Tournament in pretty good fashion. ☺

Did you watch the same game I did? Clark sat out decent stretches with foul trouble. Czinano sat out almost an entire quarter. The guards and forwards each had a bit of a rest. The bigger concern would have been the longer stretches on defense with offensive rebounds. However this is a team that is used to going hard at it. We didn't see much tired legs in the B1G tournaments which is games back to back.

Battles was "the best player on the floor", Sherrod the "fastest player with the ball in NCAA D1 women's basketball". Both were sent packing.

Van Lith is solid, she plays with attitude.

CC, Monkey. Take your pick:
Chemistry and Confidence, or
Caitlin Clark.

I watched half of the game last night. I think both Louisville and Ole Miss are good teams, but both I would rank below the Hawkeyes. The Hawkeyes will bring much more firepower than what Ole Miss showed Lousiville tonight. What this game showed is try to run it out and get the easy baskets, Ole Miss did that for an 8-0 run in the 1st half. Honestly, I think the teams look very similar. However I would take Clark and Czinano are a step above Van Lith and anyone else they have. We will see. To me anymore Iowa's role players have been showing up. If Clark can continue to perform on the big stage that will determine how we do. I didn't see any defensive pressure from Louisville that will disrupt Clark.

In the small world department: in Louisville, we will face a starting guard Chrislyn Carr from Davenport; played high school at Davenport West and then Rock Island her senior year. (also on her 4th college, I think) If we would happen to win and South Carolina pulls out a couple wins, we would then face another starter off that Rock Island team in Brea Beal--HM All American this year. Quite the talented Rocky team.
And, now for the rest of the story. Did the Rocks clean up in Illinois high school basketball that year? Nope. Because they ran into Kate F. Martin (she had a little help). Edwardsville knocked out Rock Island at least four straight years.

Van Lith is a very good player but has acted like a crap person. I truly love how “our” gals conduct themselves for the VAST majority of time and represent the university and the community.
